GE makes a symphony II 20kw generator that easily handles a larger home. You DO NOT need a super large generator. The computer logic on a quality 20kw will power a 3200 sf home easily as long as you're not blasting every electronic in the home. It uses less fuel and cost half as much.

I beg to differ, I tried a 22KW at my home which is about 3600sq ft and it was constantly running at 100% to keep 2 AC units, hot water heater, two fridge/freezers, and five deep freezers going along with the well and the occasional load of clothes and dishes. I like having a little extra and not running the generator at 100% capacity at all times.

Now I will add I used the 22KW about seven years ago, they may be "smarter" now than they were then.

How much would a 20-22kW(or so) Generac cost installed in the BR area? Runs off of natural gas.

I thought I remember reading after Katrina that the generacs had a lot of problems with rotors burning up. I know my grandparents generac completely locked up at some point and I believe that was the problem.

This is precisely my point. There is no need to run 7 freezers and 2 fridges all simultaneously. I would also think that cycling the 2 ac units woulnd't be a bad deal either. The normal household doesn't have 5 deep freezers with 2 regular fridge/freezers. The new PLC that control the operation of the GE 20kw generator allows you to cycle these items as determined by user. You can cycle the freezers. This hurricane I lost two freezers and the food was still frozen two days after initial power was lost. No harm done. The GE unit would allow you to run 8 high voltage appliances as once while managing your a/c output.

Why in the world, if you were going to spend the money and do this, would you not want to be able to run everything just like you where still hooked up to power. That why I bought mine. If I wanted to unplug fridges and cycle ACs I would still have a regular generator with cords running everywhere.

Natural gas is a lot cheaper than a couple of years ago

Shortly after Katrina, natural gas (at least on the spot market) was in the $13.50/1000 scf range, more recently, it has been below $2, now seems to be in the $2-3 range, and will remain cheap unless we re-elect our current "leader" who has declared war on the oil and gas industry. There's a reason all those LNG terminals that we were debating open versus closed loop on just 5-7 year ago are all getting permits to export instead of import.

Too bad Entergy hasn't gotten the news that prices have dropped and continue to charge their captive customers a fuel adjustment charge.

Gotta say, I agree here. If your gonna install a a generator, get one big enough to run it all. That being said, I believe the poster was just pointing out that 5 deep freezes is not common, and most homes in similiar size range would require less KW.

Well from my point of view last I checked this was the Outdoor board. WHile most people may not have 5 deep freezers, I do.

I don't buy meat for my family we eat what I kill or raise here on the farm. At any one time I may have 6-9 deer, turkey, pigs, a side of cow, shrimp, fish, etc in my freezers. One reason we bought a generator was so that we would NOT have to worry about all of that going bad.

It's been one of the better investments we have made, and I would do it again.

You are correct, but I suspect if you took a poll of the Outdoor Board, as well as the general population of generator shoppers, your 5 deep freezes in 1 home - would be in a strong minority.

Agree with that too, however thank God most people aren't on the OB board.

Another thought on the generator issue. If the power goes out and your wife and kids are home alone, do you want them fooling with the cirucit breaker to "adjust" things so your generator will work the entire house? I don't I want one where when it kicks on it's like nothing happened. I believe most agree with this thinking.

Centerpoint rates are running right around .50 per CCF right now.

Ziggy, how big is your house? Any particular large loads in the home? (Example, 5 deep freezers, fish tanks, swimming pool)

Let me know when you get ready to buy and install, I will give you some issues to discuss with your electrician.

Wow. No wonder our drilling has slowed down. Didn't realize it had dropped so low. Can you make sure that Entergy realizes that, because they are still treating their customers like it's costing $13.50.

I do not recommend Briggs and Stratton. My 15kw crapped out and no one can tell me why. of course the 4 yr warranty expired 3 months ago. ran great when new during Gustav. Now loking for an 18kw or 20 kw.

Got a 30kw diesel sitting on 100 gallon tank. 3300sf 3acs etc. runs everything.

A lot less to buy and hook up. Only have to run electrical.

How does it do on the diesel? How long does 100 gallons last?
