Three things to look at
1. What do the professional lawn care guys use, most will be Scag, Xmark or Kubota. Others are used but these have a huge marked share. Most make residential and commercial units. Look at the commercial side which has heavier steel and more reinforcements, larger blade spindles & spindle shafts, heavier belts, higher grade transmissions, higher grade engine.
2. What is the length of the warranty. It usually is from 1 to 5 years.
3. Location of a reputable dealer who will service your mower in miles from you. If you need to bring in your mower for service work it's not fun to drive over an hour away.

Residential would be Hustler with the better seat.
I have an ex mark Residential that I've had for 12 years probably and has given me no trouble.
The new ones though I'd go Hustler.
Commercial probably a Scag.

I have a 42" Bad Boy Rambler and it's a great machine
Just bought this one and its a great mower. After being a cheap a-hole and buying cub cadets from Home Depot (2 in last 3 years) I finally bought this welded deck machine from a local tractor dealer with its own service department. That alone makes all the difference.
Just as impressive has been the quality of the cut. We have a few crazy undulations in our yard. The cheap lawn tractor mowers were scalping the shite out of it. This mower compensates perfectly and makes nice even cuts all over. And no, im not getting paid for this review.

I've had a Bad Boy MZ 42in with a kohler for 6 years and I've beat the hell out of it and it runs like a top and still cuts great. I do lawn care part time with it. I wouldn't exactly say I'm meticulous with maintenance but overall its well cared for. Great machine for what I paid though.

I’ve got an electric Greenworks I bought last year. No complaints only compliments from My neighbors as it is so quiet they can’t hear it. Very power fuel and no belts, no oil, no gas, I have four batteries and they charge in an hour and half, very hot appt with the construction, everything is stainless.

If you have the money, I cannot recommend Exmark highly enough. I’ve owned Scag, Hustler, and Exmark, all older model mowers. Here is what I found to be true:
Scag- bulletproof but heavy, weight tended to leave ruts on lawns
Hustler- most fun to drive but the two I owned broke a lot
Exmark- best cut, fairly light, and just as durable as a Scag. My 2003 Lazer Z is still running perfect and I have put that mower through hell.
Hope this helps!

Bought the 42” Hustler Raptor for 3499.00 a few days ago. First time not pushing a lawn mower in my 59 years. Can’t wait to cut

K&D in baton rouge has a huge selection of lawn equipment. When I’ve brought my mower in for repair, it’s never taken longer than a week to fix and the cost has been reasonable

You should love it. That’s a dream machine for a residence.
I should probably clarify my earlier post: my 36” Hustler Fasttrak was invicible and perfect for smaller yards. OP, don’t let what I said earlier scare you away from Hustler.
