My son want to take the boat out and catch some big catfish. Trying to stay near baton rouge to save gas money. I have very little river catfishing experience and would love to get my boy on a big fish. He's obsessed with catching catfish since he hooked into a 30ish lber in our neighborhood pond.

See above. Big cats on the Mississippi. You could probably launch the boat somewhere around BR, but you would save even more gas money just bank fishing.

There is a launch on the southeast side of the bridge. Drive up the trailhead access right under the bridge at River Road and South Blvd to access it. Head south or north 5-10 miles to get out of the industrial portion of the river in BR.

I target big blues here in Oklahoma from mid October through January, never fished the Mississippi River near Louisiana though. I've fished in catfish tournaments along the Mississippi in Missouri and the Ohio River. If you can get big skipjack, that's money for big blues.

We don't have skipjack here in the Red River/Lake Texoma so I use fresh caught gizzard shad mainly. The best here though is catch a limit of stripers early (10 per). Clean them and that red meat is pure shad oil stuff that will catch big blues also. If I can only catch threadfin and not gizzard, that's what I do. I never use baits that I haven't caught within the past 24 hrs. With the exception of cut carp, it won't stay on a hook as well, especially in a river.

If you're trying to catch the monsters, double hook your baits.

Do you have planer boards? If you don't, they help a TON with getting a good spread from your boat. I recommend Zakk Royce or B-Kat. I'm using Zakk Royce boards now.

As mentioned, big cats in the Mississippi River. One time years ago my pow pow went down with a group of divers under the Vicksburg bridge and he saw giant catfish driving around in Volkswagens.

Lake Varret look into setting jug lines ( check law) need to tag you gear I think. Cut bait or who live bait. Out in main lake
Fish while letting jugs soak and put out some on rod and reel. Wait long enough will catch some.
Best time seems to be May-July but should catch some now.

The hook must've had a gap between the eyelet and the shaft because as I was reaching down to drag him on the bank, he pulled the hook off without breaking the line. It was between 35-40" blue cat, some mad lad must've threw him in the pond.

Where do you actually fish though. What depth, what structure, in the straights, the bends, the drop off, the center and what type of bait works best

The one in Dutchtown?

You can catch an absolute ton of catfish in lake Des Allemands but not the huge ones like in the river.

Tell him to check out “M. Hood Fishing” on YouTube. He’s a guy that bank fishes the MS River all around New Orleans and catches monster cats.

anchor on the side and cast out towards the middle. try in the intracoastal and in some of the smaller canals off of the intracoastal. for bait i would use cut shad or whatever kind of cut bait you could get.

Learn to throw a cast net. It's one of the most important skills for catfishing.
