Can anyone give a recommendation on who breeds quality chocolate labs? I am looking for a working pedigree (AKC FT, UKC and AKC HT) type of breeding.

I have never owned a chocolate but would like to get one fairly soon to replace my 12 year old male who just passed away last month.

I’ve had 2 dogs from Gator Point Kennels and they were both great hunting dogs. RIP Cody and Shiloh :( I heard some lady out of Colorado is running it now or is very involved.

I have a black female out of Chief. Chief is the dog bleedpurplengold linked previously in the thread. Do some research on this dog. He throws good pups that many owners and trainers across the country are currently bragging on. My 18 month old was a choc x black cross that yielded more black than choc. My best advice would be to find a quality pairing then get a pup out of that breeding no matter the color. If I knew then what I know now I would have taken my dog in baby blue with pink polka dots.

This is my understanding too. I emailed the contact info on the site when I started looking for a new dog about a year ago but I never heard back.

My Gator Point chocolate has been a fantastic dog but only had a few generations of GP on the female side (Dakota Roux sired). When I got her in the late 00s, GP had a litter with 5 generations of GP dogs on both sides. Let’s just say the trainer was not too impressed with it. They were very nice people the one time we met and had a lot of passion for their dogs.

IIRC, Mrs Cleo had a long write up about a GP female being registered with forged paperwork to start the silver lab thing.

Update for all of you that gave advice.

Lincoln - have emailed, LVM and called numerous times. CRICKETS….. don’t really like the that style of running a business but heck, I guess they are so successful they don’t need new customers.

Gator point- same as above so at least first guy isn’t unique

Thanks for the help and when I choose a pup I’ll post a picture here. In the meantime here are a couple picks of my female who died way to soon.

Blue Ribbons in the AA! Damn, the good ones die young. After having a black bitch like that, what's sparked your interest in deviating over to chocolate?

If you're interested in fox red, I had some hit the ground last week.

You may want to contact Doug and Lynn Dodge in Iowa. They continue to produce quality pups from the FC AFC Louisiana Roux MH line. Roux was my old chocolate male that is responsible for my dog addiction. He and some of his offspring have produced some outstanding field trial, hunt test, and gun dogs including Ammo, Boot, Buddy and Bayou Magic’s Fannie Quigley. Fannie is a chocolate factored black that is a product of a Roux line breeding. She is the best pup I’ve ever had my hands on. I will be adding at least two more from Doug later.

Chocolate question- this will be a dog that my family collectively calls theirs and he will be trained solely by me after “force fetching”. We will run it in UKC & AKC hunt tests and it will be my hunting companion. And in roughly 35-40 years of owning labs I’ve never owned a chocolate or fox red.

Fox red question- sure, send me the pedigree and let me take a look. I am deciding right now between a chocolate breeding that bleedpurpleandgold turned me on to and another line. I’ve never owned a fox red but have recently seen some really nice ones that were competing at a high level.
