Best All Around Rifle

I’m sure this has been discussed but I wasn’t able to find anything when searching.
I’ve never been a big hunter outside of waterfowl. So my knowledge of rifles is limited at best. I have a few rifles but they are on the low/cheap end (mossberg and two savages). I’m looking for an all around good rifle that I can buy that is capable and is also of good quality. Be used mainly for deer at various yardages. Longest shot at the club is probably 220 yards (doubt I could make that shot but maybe in the future) some friends have been talking of a possible elk hunt in the near future so a rifle capable of that would be nice too. I’ve heard everything from a Ruger M77 to the Browning X-Bolt. I figured this board would be the best place to turn for info. Caliber and brand info is appreciated.

Well if you want to throw elk into the mix and have a really capable elk gun I gotta suggest 300 winmag.
Deer my favorite is 308.
Both 300 winmag but it’s overkill for deer.

Ruger American in 308 with a Nikon or leupold optic. Around $450-$600 total and will do everything you need for whitetail.

7 mag should do everything you want. Tikka of course is the OB standard. I was just at sportsman’s wherehouse in Slidell and they have the tikka t3x in stainless with black stock, fluted barrel (superlite model) for 699$ I don’t need another gun but if they had the caliber I wanted I would’ve bought it lol

Not too many off the shelf factory guns get me excited anymore but I would like to buy one of those Browning Hell’s Canyon in a .270wsm.

So if we’re comparing rifles where does the Weatherby Mark V, Browning X-Bolt, Ruger M77, and Remington 700 stack? Let’s just stick with deer hunting for this comparison. .308 caliber.

For an all around rifle I think the caliber has to be the 30-06.

Mark V is a big heavy rifle isn't it?
I have a Browning xbolt, I find the trigger to be heavy 4.5 lbs, it was one of the first model years. I'll eventually replace the trigger with a timney

M1 Garland, 30-06, iron sights, perfect in the woods at up to 150yds unless you have really good eyes.

What would be a reason to choose a .308 over 7-08? Seems like the 7-08 would have all of the same capabilities but with better ballistics out to range.

IF he was just looking at deer hunting, it is hard to beat the 7mm08, but throw elk into the mix and I would want a heavier bullet

But I would also recommend just concentrating on a deer rifle, everybody talks about going elk hunting, but few actually do, and if you really do go elk hunting that is just the excuse you need to buy a new rifle

So let’s talk more about rifles and optics for that matter. What are the things to look for (besides the feel and how it shoulders) when shopping for a rifle. What makes a browning better than a Ruger or a Remington and vice versa? And what are the recommended optics? Like I said I’m not a rifle guy so I need this stuff broken down.

I have a .308 that I’ve killed multiple deer with and an elk. My dad has a 7 mag that he’s used on deer and elk that works great. I’d say can’t go wrong with either of those

I wanted something light first of all, then something with a freefloated barrel and crisp 3.5lb trigger. Those were mainly what I was looking for bc I have a ruger and had to spend 250$ getting the barrel floated, glass bedding the stock and fixing the trigger bc the factory trigger was gritty and set to 6lbs.
