Best 1 ton truck to pull a 5th wheel?

I've had a Silverado 2500HD and loved that truck. Is the Silverado 3500 or the GMC Sierra a good choice for towing?
What should I be aware of traveling across the country if I want to carry a firearm?
Is a Class A a better choice than a 5th wheel?
Thank you for the responses. My first post on the OB.

Not what kind of truck.
How much weight? New or used? Gas or diesel?
Ford, GM or Dodge will all do it. You have to decide what it is you want to do.

He lives in RI. What states will he go through?

Seems like if I keep the gun locked up and the ammo separate I'd be okay in most states.
But at night I would not want to go through all of that unlocking.

I'd stick with GM. The new Dodges have that huge screen in the center, and the Fords are Fords

Ford F450 is best. Ram 3500 is second. GM 3500 is third.
Look at what hot shot drivers drive and you will see the evidence provided above.

I bought my first Ford F250 4x4 with 6.7 diesel a few years ago after back to back GMC 2500 diesels. I have to tell you...
You are spot on. This is my first and last Ford. Ford tough my arse.

I appreciate the responses. My thinking is the Duramax with the Allison transmission is good for towing.
My 2500 was a gas, think it was a 6L Vortec. So I'm not familiar with the diesel.
I've heard that Cummins might be better but that there are drawbacks because it's a Dodge.
How many miles will a Duramax run?

Drove cross country with 2 friends in a '14 Ram 2500 diesel pulling 8-9k of trailer + Jeeps + motorcycle. Pulled like a dream that weight didn't stress the truck at all. Barely had to down shift driving through the Sierra Nevada mountains. Exhaust brakes were the tits. I dont know how it compares to other new trucks but this one impressed me.

Get you that 5.9 cummins and profit baw.
We put half a million on em on the regular, and from day one they got a gooseneck behind them. I've made a killing with this truck with a hand shaker in the floorboard.

For traveling, the class A is a better choice. If your just weekend camping, I'd stick with a fifth wheel. My Silverado 3500 pulled my fifth wheel comfortably.

I've owned 3 rams in the last 11 years.. I was a concrete contractor for most of that time. I trashed 2 ford 6.0s pulling a dozer. Never had a problem out of the deleted rams.. my 3500 is a 13 model and still pulls great. The reason I won't own another Ford is because they did everything they could not to warranty my last one..

The new Ram interior is really nice. They’ll all pull a 5th wheel just fine.

Your question is Moot OP, get a Class A. If you truly want to cross country routinely it’s the way to go. The only negative is that you don’t have a vehicle, but you can bring a moped or tow something.
If you have something like a hunting camp or other situation where you routinely leave your 5th wheel somewhere and need a vehicle for the weekend that’s different. But for driving around the country a motorhome is way better.
The big difference to me is the time savings in the morning on travel days. You get up hit the coffee and get on the road while your wife sleeps in. 3500’s are now very comfortable, but no where close to a motorhome.
