I've been living in South Carolina for the past 20 years. Just moved back to northeast Louisiana and can't believe the number of bear, not just along the Mississippi. It seems they've made a big push west.

What are the LDWF waiting on in regards to a potential season?

I could’ve sworn we saw one on the side of Chef Menteur highway just north of the water, but it was dark and we were doing 50+. I could just be that city boy that saw a trash can.

Couple pages discussing it a few days ago.
Pretty much:
Coon asses still shooting to many
The Missouri bears are not banging the la bears
Environmental groups are against it
Someone who’s cousins with some who knows someone’s cousin who’s high up inthe LDWF says we are close.

I saw my first two in Mississippi this year. One in May and one last week. Obviously they are not yet to the point where they should be hunted.

NW Fla has a big population. About 5 years ago they decided to hold their first hunt. They estimated the population at 4000 bears. So, they decided to allow a one week hunt with 500 tags. But they assumed hunter success would be about 40% and they would kill 200 bears in the 7 day season.

By noon on the second day 300 bears had been checked in on the app. So they shut the hunt down immediately with 304 bears killed.

Based on their formula, they now think there were actually about 10,000 to 12,000 bears instead of their earlier estimate of 4000. And that number has been growing. There hasn't been a hunt since that one (2016 I believe).

TLDR: There's a lot of bears out there.

You're forgetting the part where the SoFL tree huggers voted to shut it down, and there hasn't been a season since.

ETA: you got the no mo season part

the season started here inn North Carolina a few weeks ago. Almost everyday when I drive to town a see the hunters parked on the side of the road with their hounds in their kennel trucks.

I've only seen one bear here in three years, but I also don't do anything to attract them to my property like put up bird feeders or leave trash outside. Apparently this county has a lot of bears.

Sensitive topic? I don't understand why they don't offer a limited season just in the areas where they have become well established.

I'm neither for or against killing a bear. Have no desire to shoot one personally, just hearing land owners and hunters up here complain about them.

No reason not to have a limited season in NE Louisiana.

I don’t think it’s a sensitive topic, like anything else everyone has an opinion.
I don’t think I would want to hunt them like I do whitetails and shoot one every year or every other year. But after reading one post, I do want to shoot at least one and make a bear rug so that I can make love on it in front a my fireplace!!!

I personally can’t imagine wanting to shoot one.

But if I did, what would be the preferred gun? Would a .308 be ok?

A 308 or any other high powered rifle would be fine.

If I see one on our land, I’d shoot it in the leg so it’ll run off and not tear feeders and everything else up.

I hunt the marsh in Iberia parish. The population down here is healthy to say the least. I’ve heard rumors of a possible lottery season for Iberia and St. Mary parish for a few years now. We definitely have enough bear down here to have a lottery type hunt for them.

Joe Biden would agree - shoot them in the leg.

Saw my first one this morning off Hwy 319 on the way to cypremort point. Thing was walking in the middle of a gravel drive and didn’t give a damn! People were at their camps within 200 yds. They are much bigger than I had previously thought!

We are close, if they can prove the populations are intermingling

A few years back, I saw 8 in a 26 hour period, and part of that time was night and I was inside. The handwringing about having a season is rediculous. When they claw the post of your porch and eat your deer stands, you’re ready for a season.
