Proheart. Just got my lab her 12 month shot. Kind of skeptical about it.

ETA: My wife just got my lab a 12 month proheart shot. She didn't ask many questions.

It’s what the local rescue I work with uses on all the dogs they take in
I also use it for my Boxer, she is a PITA taking medicine, I have tried them all
She’s had no issues

Get some ivermectin from a feed store, put it on bread with peanut butter, and don't worry anymore. Treat a dog for heartworms for about $15 per year

Been doing that for my old lab for 13 years. Didn't feel like having to dose 3 dogs

Ivermectin might be on the scarce side.

In MS Covid patients are treating themselves with it at home.

We have been using the 6 month Proheart for a few years. No issues. We just had our dogs given the 1 year.

If you go with the Proheart, then you still need to de-worm your dog monthly.

Vet gave me Strongid for worms. He told me after he gave the 12 month shot. I will be switching back to monthly pills because I am still giving meds once a month. (I got a 2nd opinion on this and it was consistent)

There is a $20 rebate on the Proheart. Vet told me it has been used overseas for many years.

the shot is definitely the way to go. I went to battle with trifexus as my lab took it monthly and still got heartworms. With the shot, the drug company can't argue that you forgot to give it and/or the dog spit it out.

Yes I still have to administer meds monthly for flea, tick, and worms. My thought is that I can "forget for 5-10 days" and my dogs will be fine with a few fleas. I just hated forgetting to give the HW pill and putting the dogs at risk.

that was part of my line of thinking with it as well. I'm pretty bad about forgetting meds. I have her on Bravecto for fleas so i only have to worry about that every 3 months and the vet sends me a card for it.

I have a 25 pound mutt that is 14. She has been on the proheart shot her whole life. Never got sick.

My great dane is 9. Same deal all good.

I had a lab and a great dane that got heart worms on heart guard prior to owning the above two dogs. The dane died and the lab barely made it through. My vet quit recommending heart guard to large and giant breeds at that time because we were not the only unlucky ones that went through his clinic.
