Lots of close but not quite information in here. Sound Suppressors are legal to own. There is a form that must be filled out and sent to the ATF. You purchase a $200 non transferrable, non refundable tax stamp for each item Plus the cost of the item. It can be anything from destructive devices, Short barreled rifles, suppressors, full auto.
There are two ways to get a NFA stamp. One is to get a revocalble living trust set up. This will allow an individual to name people to the trust and use the suppressor, sbr, full auto, whatever. It also allows the owner of the trust to skip the local law enforcement approval signature process.
These days, many sheriffs will not sign the ATF paperwork. The Trust will circumvent the Sheriff. It also allows friends or family members to use the item without you being present.
The other way is to get the sheriff's signature and this allows for ONLY you to have access and use of the device. It really limits who can utilize the item and I would not recommend anyone going this route.
Count on 6-8 weeks to receive the NFA device once you have purchased it and sent in paperwork. I got one in 39 days once, and that was pretty fast. I think in 2007.
LA "Nongame nuisance quadrupeds" only §116.1. Wild birds and wild quadrupeds; times and (3)
Take or kill any game bird or wild quadruped with a firearm fitted with any device to deaden or
silence the sound of the discharge thereof

Thank god someone got the correct info.
Also, if you dont want to do a trust you can set up an LLC.
Edit: I think the current backlog for NFA stuff is 4-6 months.
I would contact Derrek @ Big Boy Armament.

4-6 months???
Times they are a changing....It used to not take that long. I guess I need to order that .308 can sometime sooner rather than later. If I want to see it this year...

Tactical Innovations sells some nice suppressors and upgrades for Rugers. Rimfirecentral is a great forum for research.

Here is a website, should give a better outlook on timeframe.
NFA tracker
I wish I could afford one, Id do the trust if it wasnt so much to set it up. I really want a AAC Cyclone for my 260 being built.

A Gun Trust is about $300-400.
Texas Gun Trust.
I don't know who does them in LA, but that should get you in and out. You can also use an online trust document and go that route. You just have to be wary of filing an incorrect document.
I like everything I have read about AAC. I am looking at this one from AWC. 300 Win Mag "Thor"

Subsonic ammunition is a much easier solution.
If you're set on getting a suppressor, than yes they are legal. You just have some legal bullshite to go through.
Unless you know a guy who knows a guy...

CCI CB Longs are subonic and readily available, even at Walmart. Their range is markedy reduced-at about 50 yards and they lack the power to cycle in a semiauto weapon, but they are a lot of fun and no louder that a pellet gun.

I buy Remington SubSonic Rounds. They are Hollow Point of Solid Point and they will cycle in a 10/22; Walther P22, and obviously a bolt.
Remington's Site for SubSonic Rounds
I find them at WalMart all the time.
Edit: Also, with a suppressor- the .22 round is quieter than snapping your fingers. The action is the loudest part of the shot being fired in my CZ452 American. The 10/22 lets out some gas, but is still quiet. The Walther p22 is loud to the point you might think a gun is being fired. An integral Ruger 10/22 or Ruger Mark Pistol is quieter than a twist on can by a good bit.

Are any of the subsonics quieter than CB .22 shorts? I want something really quiet for my revolver for armadillos and stuff from the deer stand.

I only use the Remington subsonics through my suppressed guns. With the CZ bolt, it is quiet to the point of being absurd. The loudest noise made is cycling the bolt. Someone standing 10 yds away might not turn around or notice the shot.
It has been so long since I fired a CB round, but I would think you could by a 50rnd box of the Remington SubSonics and compare them.

I've always used the REM subsonics because they will cycle in my semi auto rifles and pistols.
I don't think I can shoot shorts. If I remember correctly the CBs are shorter than the .22 LR round and would not feed in my magazines.
Sorry, I just haven't purchased any CB rounds in 15? years or more so can't really say as to their performance.

They were quiet as a pellet gun out of my old .22 crack barrel, but LR's weren't very loud ether. With this pistol I need ear plugs for .22 LR and the .22 mags are extremely loud.
The good thing about a revolver is I don't have to worry about ammo cycling or shooting too dirty or anything. If it fits it shoots

i'm not an expert in diff kinds of .22 rounds but if i'm looking for a more quiet round for my .22 rifle ror hunting what should i get?
again i think the original posters misunderstood my post. i was asking if silencers were illegal to hunt with. i figured they were but i never really had a reason to inquire about it until i bought my ruger .22 rifle. its a great gun but is really loud for small game hunting.

That was my question. If you have a semi (or really most rifles) you'll only be able to chamber and cycle .22 LR rounds. Nimblecat says remington .22 subsonics are quiet, but they probably aren't as effective as a regular LR round. I guess it depends on how for your shots will be whether it matters or not.
The only quieter rounds I've shot are CCI CB .22 shorts, but they won't fit in most rifles (they fit in my crack barrel .22 rifle). I haven't shot any through my pistol yet, I want to compare them to the .22 subsonics and see which is quieter.
There was an old thread where someone compared all of the quiet .22 rounds and reviewed each one, but I can't find it right now. I can't remember who the poster was.
And also, I don't think a regular .22 LR is too loud for hunting. At least not squirrel hunting.

thanks for your input boats this ruger i bought is so loud. ive never shot a .22 that actually echos outside until i shot this thing and it sucks because i got it for squirrel but hell i kill one squirrel and i wont see another bc its so loud.

What is it? 10/22? Semi? Is it a carbine?
