I bought the combo and the 5. The cheap red dot went on a semi auto 22mag. The 5 with predator reticle went on an AR. I really like the magnifier decent quality for the investment. I've had multiple low power variables, cool stuff but heavy. The magnifier adds weight but it's not permanent weight so to speak.

Do not buy. It is a huge POS. I had one and it quit working after 6 months. Returned to sig. they sent me a new replacement and it lasted 9 months. I had it on a Smith and Wesson .22 AR. Those things are terrible. They are notorious for random red dot failures.

So the 5 would be better?

What is it going on?

If you are putting on an AR the Romeo 4t would be the best bang for your buck. I have one on a SBR and it is pretty durable and reliable.

Those cheaper Sig red dots have very cheap electronics and really slow refresh LED rates. It’s not a question of if they will fail you but when. I have always been a buy once cry once buyer.

An AR-15 in 5.56.

I had a guy at a local gun store try to sell me a Holosun 501C.

I have vortex 3x on my AR I like. Seems to be perfect for 100 yards and under.
I don’t remember which one it is.

Would be better than the Romeo 5 or MSR. Up your budget to get at least a Aimpoont Carbine Otic, Romeo 4 or Holosun $400 range optic. You will be happier in tge long run

This Holosun might be worth a look
It’s the 530G and has a titanium case. It’s really close to the Sig Romeo 4 line for a few dollars less.

I got tired of my red dot plus 3x magnifier combo and replaced it with a 1-5x ffp scope. I tried it out for the first time today and I'll never go back to the old combo. It is a much better setup.

Aimpoint pro red dot. No magnifying. 8” group at 150 yards. I’d like a 3x flip up to go with it but not paying $600 right now.

The vortex 3X is a good budget option.

I used a Holosun 510GR w/ Vortex 3x for a year before switching to LPVO (Leupold VX3HD 1.5-5) and haven't looked back

I switched b/c I ended up using the 3x all the time, so the weight was similar. If CQB or close range steel is your game - RDS all day. If you hunt or shoot a bit further consider a LPVO

You can get the 5 for $120 ish pretty regularly on sale. Academy has it currently for $129.

I have one and haven’t had any issues with it, but can’t offer an opinion on it because it’s the only one I’ve ever had.

Couldn’t figure out why everyone loves a red dot when I looked through it the first time. Saw a big arse hairy blob (not the wife)…my dumbass had no idea that an astigmatism causes that. Put on my glasses and it was a crisp little red dot.

On my .300blk sbr I have a Leupold 1-4.
AR-10 .308 Trijicon AccuPower 1-8x28
Radian AR-15 .223 wylde Nightforce NX8 1-8x24

Trijicon is a beast
The nightforce is the lightest of the the three and the best glass.

I went budget, just to check the concepts out. Did some searching online, for things that got decent reviews at that price point.

Picked up, for red dot + magnifier:
Agukexsa red dot
NcStar 3x magnifier
I got these for under $100 total.

For LPVO:
Tacfire 1-4x (on sale at AIM). It was on sale at the time for $50, with the mount included.

Been pleasantly surprised with both setups. The Agukeska red dot is a shake-awake, I found it on 704 Tactical's review. He takes cheap stuff and beats the frick out of them to see if they hold up, and he gave it a great review. I got it for $50 at the time, and it's clear and holds zero for me.
The cheapo NcStar magnifier has clear glass for the price, and eye relief is about 3.5", enough for me to get a good picture. The complaint was about the mount (it isn't the snuggest when flipped up), but I saw a guy who posted how to shim it, and that solved the problem for me.

The cheapo Tacfire LPVO also has clear glass, about 3.75" eye relief for 4x, and an illuminated reticle. I tossed it on a C308, and it's held up.

I have no regrets for either, and although I doubt they will be as good as top brands, they work for now. I'd probably lean towards the LPVO as a better distance device.

First, sign up for Palmetto State Arms daily deal email. Save some money. I got my Romeo 5 for $99.

As for magnifier on AR, just depends on your intention. If it's home defense, then I'd say it's kinda pointless unless you live on acreage. If it's for plinking around then you really dont need the shake awake feature. I've debated putting an ACOG on my AR and use canted red dot/sites for close up.
