Which parts specifically are proprietary

I think the gas system is proprietary (so a proprietary gas tube length).

The barrel that comes with the M&P10 is already excellent so I wouldn't let that stop me from buying one.

You can play around with the ones you already have. Take it apart, put it back together. That's basically building it.... essentially.
There are some finer points of doing your own build. For instance, making sure that your parts are compatible. The OB experts can always look at your build and give you pointers.

As far as interchangeable, most AR platforms are modular by nature. So, you could always just swap out an upper or lower or whatever. I'm sure it won't be an issue. And if it ever is, don't worry. Some guy or company some where will be able to help you out. lol

But you really can't go wrong with the M&P10 if you aren't wanting to go custom. IMO.

That is definitely not the case with AR-10/LR-308.

A DPMS lower will not work with Armalite upper or vice versa.

Not 100% sure aa Aero upper will work with a PSA Lower, but I will find out soon enough.

I have the armalitte ar10t with 20” bull barrel. Good gracious that gun is heavy.

I built a 6.5 Grendel and prefer it way over the 308. Probably 1/2 the weight and negligible ballistics difference for where I’m hunting.

I’d sell the ar10 if I believed in selling guns

This is what turned me off. There is no way I could not fiddle with it after like a month.

Most people won't fiddle with their guns but I agree it's a sickness. I can't buy a gun and not change something on it...

Yup, I've had the parts for a new bolt gun for a few months now. Have had 2 different actions(Remington and Stiller) for the gun and just pre-ordered a third(bighorn origin). Time to sell the Stiller. One day I'll get it together.
