I have several AR15 and AK rifles, but I would like to add an AR10 to my collection.

I have looked at the SIG 716 and also the M&P10, but dont know if anyone has other models they like. Rifle will mostly be used for relatively long range (500-700 yards) plinking and hog\coyotes (targets of opportunity).

Any opinions or recommendations much appreciated.

I’m planning on building an Aero Precision M5, which is their AR10 platform. It overall looks like a solid starting spot if you plan to build. Know that some parts are proprietary though and you have to make sure you’re using either LR308-type parts or AR10-type parts. They’re similar but not the same.

Or if you get an assembled rifle, I’d highly advise the M&P10. Nutnfancy’s review on YouTube has it shooting sub-MOA with a lot of loads and it’s lightweight for its size and chambering. If I wasn’t building, I’d be buying this one.

If you are planning to use it for longer range shooting then you really need to build it.

Those guns both come with a 16-18” barrels. Those will work but you will eventually want a longer barrel out a better trigger. I have the Magpul prs stock on mine. I had a .308 barrel and ended up putting a 6.5cm barrel on it (everything is interchangeable except the gas block). It’s a 22” barrel.

Word of warning, these are heavy guns especially with the scope and magazine with Ammo. Mine with the suppressor and mag is 15lbs. You can definitely cut the weight down but I didn’t care about that with mine

A little more info about the build
DPMS lower
Aero upper
Ballistic Advantage 22” 6.5 cm barrel
Midwest industries rifle length hand guard
Magpul PRS
Rock Island two stage trigger
Meopta Meopro 4.5-14x50
Burris extreme rings

I just finished an Aero M5 for the most part. Pretty much everything is Aero sans the buffer kit and A2 style stock. Really wanted the SR-25 look.

I built mine in 6.5 CM with a 22" barrel. Only things I have left are a bipod, mlok bipod adapter and a VG6 6.5 brake.

Couple friends just bought their uppers and lowers from palmetto state armory for less than 600$ I think. Of course, this is bare bones and they plan on changing a bunch but it’s a starting point

Buy the bolt with the barrel that’s been headspaced at the factory

Edit to fix from gun to barrel

Aero has a partnership with BA, bought a completed upper without BCG and charger. I almost positive from everything I read before buying that BA supplies Aero with barrels for the completed uppers. So ya, we should have the same exact barrel.

As far as headspace goes DSFT, I won't really be checking as the factory installed the barrel and headspace being off enough to affect anything is very, very rare. If I run into problems, I'll have to buy a go/nogo/field set.

Only other thing I was thinking about was getting a Viper 6.5x20 50mm, so I can really dial in around 500. Right now I'm just running a 3-9x 40 Leupold.

Palmetto State has some pretty competitive prices right now. I bought one back before Christmas and I love it.

I see a lot of replies about building my own. I have never done that. All my other rifles were bought off the shelf.

Is building one something a newbie could do? Im sure I could watch a bunch of YouTube videos. Hopefully it wont blow up in my face the first time I shoot it.

I would like to learn how to do it. I guess I could assemble it and let a gunsmith look it over to make sure its right. I used Circlewood Gun Shop here in Tuscaloosa...

You could always buy a pre-assembled upper and just build your lower. Most of the parts you’ll want to change will be in there anyway so you could go with something easier like that.

Just added one myself, around 550 I think. Bought upper and lower separately now I’m waiting on the 6.5 cm setup to become available then I’m swapping the upper to that. I’ll be in for less than a grand easy.

I have an Armalite Super SASS I got through a trade. I love it. It has an adjustable gas block for shooting suppressed. I have a Burris XTRII 3-15-50 in it. The trigger is great as well. Also comes with PRI gas buster CH.It’s a tack driver. Stock photo below.

Would like to keep it around $1k. My last AR15 was a Sig M400 and I really like it.

I have never tried to build one. But I guess is would not be too hard to learn.

Bapple mentioned the M&P10, but after reading the review there are a few parts on that gun that are not interchangeable... will that matter or are they just parts that I would not ever need to change?

I appreciate the comments and help any of you can give out.

Which parts specifically are proprietary? My guess is that most of the proprietary parts are low-wear parts that you will never wear out anyway. Keep in mind it's a 308 so unless you're ole money bags and can shoot it thousands of times, I highly doubt you'll wear out any part.

As far as simple things like grip, stock, trigger, etc. almost all of those will be interchangeable with AR10/AR15 parts.

Building is not very difficult if you have the right tools and a basic level of mechanical ability.

However, if your budget is only a grand, I think you'd be better off buying an assembled rifle. The upside of building a rifle is that you can get all of the premium parts you want without having to throw away parts from an already-complete rifle.

For example, I don't like the barrel profile of the complete upper that I wish to buy from Aero Precision. Since I want a different barrel, I'm going to buy all of the parts from Aero except the barrel and assemble my own upper. The same goes for the lower - I want a premium trigger, a different grip, and a better stock. So rather than wasting money on lower-tier accessories and throwing them all away, I'd rather put the premium parts on the gun from the start.

So to sum up - if you want to stay under a grand on a rifle with no optics and you don't plan on shooting the rifle 1000s of times, get a complete M&P10. It's lightweight for an AR10 and has great accuracy. I highly doubt you'd be disappointed.
