Why do you hate Vizslas?

I don't hate, just trying to give you the facts so you can make an informed decision. If they the breeder agreed to sell you a vizsla, you must have passed the background check and interview...

Sorry, this is long.

My wife and I have a 4 yo male Vizsla, and my parents have a 4 yo female (my boy's half sister) and a 12 yo male Vizsla. My parents also had a third that just died this past Thanksgiving (the sister of the old boy they have now). So Ive been around them for over 10 years and am biased tbh. But i love em to death.

I got mine from a breeder in Texas also. My mom was getting one for my dad as a surprise, and the breeder told her that someone else backed out so there was a pup available. My wife was dying for a great dane at the time, but I couldnt find one anywhere close to us. Honestly, I kinda said screw it, ill take that Vizsla. That was such a great decision. Idk if my wife will ever let us live without a Vizsla. And I wouldn't want to either.

They are awesome dogs. Like anything you read, they do have a lot of energy and need exercise daily. Mine is a couch potato most of the time, but if you say "lets go," he will jump up and go until you physically cant go anymore. Do you have a sizeable yard by chance? If so, thats all you need as far as exercise. The Greyhound and new Vizsla will wear each other out. My wife and I talk all the time about how we wish we had at least one more.

Like someone above said, Vizslas have been appropriately nicknamed "velcro dogs," bc they always want to be right there with you. Always. We never had a problem with house training or chewing, which I think is bc my wife was so good with him as a puppy. She had just finished school and was with him all day every day for the first 6-8 months we had him. The chewing can be a problem though, so you have to work on that from day one. Keep lots of toys everywhere, at all times.

If i had it to do over, I would do formal obedience training, or at least spend way more time with it myself. Vizslas are really smart and can be hard headed. Obedience training is important.

Congrats, though. She will be a great dog and will love yall more than anything. Mine is such an awesome buddy. I wish I had 5 more just like him. The woman of the house made me get his balls cut off. So I may have to look into cloning him, haha.

That was entirely too long, I know. But Id be happy to share more if youre interested. Feel free to PM me with any questions.

Damn. My response took so long to type bc i kept getting interrupted, that i missed a lot of that back and forth. The people making all the negative comments may have had one that was left in its kennel for 8 hours a day, every day. If you do that, your Vizsla may act fricking crazy. One of my parents' Vizslas was on the crazy side, which i think is mainly bc my psycho sister had her first and treated her like shite. She ended up being the best dog you could ask for after my parents took her, though.

I know several other Vizsla owners, and none of their dogs are batshit crazy. If you want something to sit on its arse all day and show minimal signs of life, a Vizsla is probably not for you.

Most dog behavioral issues are a result of how the owner raised them.

Dont let that bullshite get you down OP. Your new pup will be awesome.

not too long at all. was happy to read it. and would love to hear more.

stories. training recommendations. anything you got.
I'm not joking when i say we go to youtube and type "vizsla" and watch videos every afternoon. it's pitiful how anxious we are for Penny to get here.

Your family dogs sounds awesome. Which is what I'm really hoping for. I've heard nightmare stories here and there, but most folks love theirs. Any chance you could post some pics of yours? The girlfriend has experience with the breed. She had a family Vizsla from the age of 6 to 16. Tucker. He was already a few years old when they got him. Someone gave him away because he was going wild locked in a house all day. Once they got him, re-trained him, and were strict with him. He was amazing.

She is a school teacher. So in 7.5 weeks, when we get Penny. She'll almost be out for the next 3 months. I have confidence in her training and discipline because her greyhound is extremely well mannered and trained. Sit, lay, go to your bed, drink your water, stay, wait, and i swear she even pisses on command with "go potty now". Even if she has nothing in her bladder she will squat down and try. Hopefully that transfers over to the new puppy as well.

Our yard is 2500 square feet or so. So not huge, but it's pretty wide open and the greyhound is able to open it up when she "makes her laps". It's funny I'll throw the tennis ball once, she'll go get it, run towards me, then start making laps around the edge of the yard full speed whether i'm attempting to chase her or not. Some days she'll just do laps on her own, no particular reason why or anyone playing with her.

The yard is also enclosed with a full 7ft fence and gates. I'll probably get cement squares to put near the gate entrance to keep her from digging out. But we were planning on letting her stay outside when the weather is good. We have a nice patio and a outdoor bed for them. Problem is, the greyhound can only stay outside when the weather is perfect. 55-80 degrees. But Penny on the other hand shouldn't be a sensitive to the weather.

We are really excited.
We already went ahead and purchased everything she will need ahead of time. Kennel, toys, bed, collars, and from what i understand the best book on vizsla's there is to read. Versatile Vizsla

The breeder said the litter had no white on them, not a spec, and it was one the best looking litters any of her dogs have had. And her dogs are show dog quality. She plans to keep one of them herself. We passed the initial interview and are guaranteed a girl, but she gets to pick which one of the litter will go to us based on our and their personality. Strange, but her call i guess. There were 3 girls and 2 boys.

This is going to be a long 7.5 weeks.

And you think I am clueless, I fricking nailed it. Those of us in the thread saying it might not be the best match, said nothing about them being crazy, we only commented on their running. It was the other vizala owners that commented on the crazy...

I had a buddy pay out the arse for one to make a hunting dog/ retriever out of. It did not turn out well, to put it nicely. He wanted to kill it. Not sure if he had a dud or what.

Out of the two that I have had dealings with, that is the truth. They are wide fricking open once they get excited

can be a nightmare if left alone

That is also true of the two I know, but a lot of dogs tear shite up if they don't have enough interaction or training

Yeah when i get home from work later tonight ill try and post some pics.

Haha i know what you mean about the waiting, it is tough. You sound like yall really have it together and know what youre doing. Honestly way better than my wife and i did with our dog. I dont know much about Greyhounds, but if yall have her trained as well as it sounds, you'll be just fine with Penny. And like you said, Penny will also learn the ropes from the Ghound, which will make it easier as well.

That yard should be plenty big for them i think. There may not be a blade of grass left after they get running around though, haha. I have heard stories of them jumping fences, but ive never been able to tell how much the storytellers were exaggerating about the fence height. Just something to keep in mind, but im sure yall already knew that. Ive never had a problem with that with mine, and we have a smaller backyard with 6ft fence.

Your breeder isnt messing around with her vetting process, haha.

I have had a Weimaraner that lived 14 years, and now a 3 year old Vizsla.
A few things having raised two neurotic breeds that stick like glue.
Crate train from day 1. If you don't you will regret it.
Do not leave the Vizsla outside by itself, it will tear the brick house down to try to get inside to you.
The velcro thing - 100% true. Mine is stuck on me, and will sit on your lap, in your face, all the time. And if she can't get to touch you all the time, get ready for the whining, constant whining.
Energy - 100% true
Full of energy, all the time. If you are a runner, I hope you run 26.2's because anything short of that is not going to tire them out. Since I don't run, I have mine trained to run alongside my bike, and we regularly go 8 miles, and she's ready to go again right away.
They go in and out constantly. We put in a doggie door, and it is the best thing we did, other than crate train her.
The laps thing made me laugh. Ours will go chase a ball, but will randomly drop the ball to run laps around our big yard. So much so, there is a trench dug on her course she runs.
They don't love the cold, unless you are in the cold with them, so keep that in mind.
Fast, Wiko is completely wrong on not being as fast, mine easily keeps up with the greyhounds at the dog park. Over a qtr mile, yes the greyhound will win, but for sprinting around a one acre yard, the Vizsla will out run them every time.
Loving, needy, fast, smart, and a great companion, that's the bottom line.

ETA: After she hit 3, we left the crate open for her during the day and night, and she's great with the freedom. Goes out by herself when she needs to, and sleeps when we are at work. not getting into anything she isn't supposed to.

Our Vizsla came from the same breeder (Julie). Great dog but get ready -- the first year will be insane.

Ours is neurotic and can whine like the best of 'em. But most of the time, he's just needy and attention seeking. He will stop and point at any bird in sight and loves to chase squirrels. In fact, he's a true athlete and runs like a race horse. For example he can run the LSU lakes non-stop and jump a four foot fence when he wants.

My one piece of advice is to be a strong pack leader. They don't respond well to overly negative training (makes him more neurotic) but definitely needs to know who's boos. If you spend time with her over a few years, she'll abide better than any dog you've ever seen.

ETA: Definitely crate train. Vizsla's house train incredibly easy. I think we only had one or two mistakes in the house in the six years we've owned ours.
