Getting a Springfield M1A squad with 18” Barrel this weekend and am thinking about slapping a long eye relief scope on it. Depending how it shoots I may use it as my deer rifle this season. Those of you with this gun what kind of accuracy are you getting?

Does the State still have a 5 shot limit on rifles when deer hunting? Doesn't the old M1 Garand hold 8?

I am in mississippi there aren’t any rifle restrictions. This is also the semiauto version of the M-14 with detachable box magazine chambered in .308

That's a big heavy rifle to lug around but it oughta work just fine.

Agreed.

I don't know if there's a round limit in LA but unless you're hunting herds of pigs a 10 round mag should suffice. It'll just be a bit heavy and bulky.

Keep ammo in the 150 - 168gr range, avoid soft points, have fun.

Can’t wait to get my hands on it as this is a bucket list gun for me.

Just my 2 cents but putting a scope on that’s rifle is an abomination. Now I have a Garand and these old eyes and those sights don’t get along so well, but I am not intending to hunt with it. That M1A is a beautiful classic, don’t ruin it, but to each his own.

Can get scope mounts for the M1A's, already drilled and tapped for mounts. Not gonna ruin anything.

Noted tiguar! She may end up being just an iron sight steel ringer. I already have a 300 blackout ar for close in deer hunting. Just like killing shite with something different

I don't have anything to add... So I'm just gonna brag by posting pics of my CMP M1 and James River Armory reproduction M1A.

My two favorite rifles right there! I would love to have a cmp garand. The one i have was an import and has a Taiwanese Barrel and also oriental sight markings. Everything else is original GI with the receiver being a 1943 Springfield armory.

Took a white-tail here in Texas a couple years ago with one. Its a good gun and I really like .308 for a mid sized animal like a white-tail.

I will say the gun isn’t the most inherently accurate rifle out there. Of course I just have the most basic model Springfield offers, not a match version or anything so there might be more accurate stuff out there. Mine mostly shoots 1.5” groups at 100 yards. So not bad, but not fantastic either, but plenty good to hit a deer at 100-200 yards.
