Are there any legal ramifications?

it is illegal and fineable in most places. you probably wouldnt go to jail.

Debating on keeping one as a pet.

if you are really debating at this point i would persuade you towards "no". They are very cute a cuddle animals when they are young. As the enter adolescence and adulthood their demeanor changes drastically. Most of the time they become fairly aggressive and much less tolerant to your presence. A male racoon is not a small animal. Do you really want a pissed off 30 lb animal with teeth and claws around you all the time?

On top of that they have a habit of making your house, and everything in it their playthings. They are extremely dexterous and a curious species. One day it might decide, "hey, i wonder whats inside that TV". no more tv. They get into your garage and decide to be auto mechanic for a day. Car needs some emergency work done now. "hey, that bottle of laxatives looks fun". Now your cleaning up after a 30 lb racoon who had explosive diarrhea all around your house. (that last one is a true story).

i would suggest have some fun with the babies now but start contacting a wildlife rehabber now.

I’d reach out to a rehabbed to care for them and set free when it’s time.

There’s no way to vaccinate them for rabies. That can become very problematic.

I had one when I was young. They are kind of cool to have, because you get a lot of attention when you have them in public. In general though, they don’t make too good of a pet…not nearly as good as a dog or cat. They will always tolerate you because you feed them, but they get pretty grouchy as they get older.

I had a veterinarian that kept up with all of the zoo animals in my town, so I would go and get vaccinations, etc. done by him.

They typically eat dog/cat food.

About 10 years back I was at Attakapas landing and a 16ft bateau with a tiller handle putt putted down that canal with an old married couple, two beagles, and a big ole' coon on the bow like George Washington crossing the Delaware.

Ok this brings back memories. Back in the early 70s I had a little girlfriend who’s dad worked for Conoco and did a bunch of work down near Grand Chenier. He found two abandoned kits that he brought home. I got one and kept it for a while. It was cool with errybody until it got bigger and then it got real mean. We eventually took it back to the marsh and let it go.

The best part was walking it on a leash down the sidewalk in Lake Charles and seeing peoples faces! Good times
