I’ve been fishing it for the past few years but I can’t seem to figure it out. It’s one of the most beautiful rivers I’ve ever been on, but it just don’t seem to produce. Has anyone else experienced the same?

I do. Catfishing is decent. To put it simply, the bass fishing on the river just isn't that good. There are a couple of guys I know that have them figured out pretty well (I'm not one of them), but the quality of fishing is nothing like other fairly close waters. I fish the river a lot in the spring for sacalait and it can be okay, but again, not like other areas. There are some guys who fish sacalait year round and do well deeper on laydowns. I just fish it after work pretty often because it's close to my house and I grew up hanging out on the river, so I enjoy being out there. It really is a beautiful river, especially upriver from the 4th street split.

Thanks for the info. It’s amazing that it doesn’t produce more fish than it does. Do you have any theories on why it doesn’t? What other bodies of water have you had better luck on in this area?

It's going to be nothing but houses the way its going.

Fishing for anything other than catfish on there is tough but I still give it a go. My lil bro does fairly well and has caught some nice ones.

I have a few theories but they’re just that. It was much better prior to Katrina. We used to catch a lot of bass on the river.

I think that the amount of lay downs and cover that developed in the river post-Katrina gave the fish a much more dispersed habitat. I also think the river has been really overfished since Katrina as the population on the northshore has grown significantly. The river sees a ton of boat traffic for its size. It used to be the case that the boat traffic stayed closer to Madisonville, but it’s grown a lot up near three rivers. I’ve had some good days out there, but never anything great and I’ve never caught any big bass. Biggest I’ve ever caught in the river was probably 3.5lbs. I do decently well with the sacalait but again I only really fish them during the spawn, which has just started I think.

Best advice I can give you is to try to get off of the main river into the smaller rivers, neighborhood canals, or areas that are close to being oxbows, but like I said, I’m not a super successful Tchefuncte angler.

I’ve done better on the Bogue Chitto, Pearl, and Tickfaw. I don’t fish any of those rivers often anymore just they’re further away and I’m not huge on freshwater fishing like I used to be. 4th street launch is 6 minutes from my house. Anything further, I’d just as soon go to the marsh or fish the pond in my back yard .

A guy caught a 10 pounder on the Tchefuncte a year or 2 ago I believe.

It’s a deep water bass fishery. If you fish shallow you’ll struggle but if you fish 12-25 ft in the bends of the river over structure you will catch more and larger bass.

What you want to do is tie up at Marina Beau Chene. Get out the boat and walk over to the golf course ponds.

We grew up pulling 5-7 lb bass out of those ponds on the reg

A buddy HAMMERED the sac a lait last three weeks it's slowed down considerably now. I don't claim to know much about fishing it I fish and hunt with a guy that is retired and fishes it or Venice every day when he calls me to go I show up.

Best I can tell you is it's not easy to fish but they are there if you can figure it out and figure out the best times of the year to go.

I definitely agree with that. The guys I know that do well fish laydowns and structure in the middle of the river on less crowded days, and the middle of the smaller rivers. I don't have the instruments/desire to do stuff like that though.

This is what I’ve been working to get better at. All of the “river fishing” articles that I’ve read seem to suggest the same thing. I guess I need to get some deeper running crank baits and jigs.

Bayou Lacombe is a close option for you. I don't bass fish but it's likely more productive than the tchefuncte. Launch at the original launch not the newer one close to the lake. Go to the right (actually straight if you're standing on the pier). Instead of following the bayou 90 degrees right turn go straight across and there's a smaller bayou that winds back a good ways and lots of structure to fish. There's several smaller offshoots all along the main bayou as well and some cool ponds out close to the lake.

Well hopedale is a no go today so will be trying the river again this evening.

I dont have the equipment to fish deep structure so working the edges and grass beds it is for me.

And correct, if you want to catch go to the beau chene pond's.

I 2nd the beau chene ponds as well. Pretty much any pond in established neighborhoods around Mandeville have big bass.

Enjoy Lacombe, i grew up water skiing on weekends and summers there.

We used to fish the Tchefuncte 40-50 years ago when I lived in the area and it had a reputation for being a tough bass fishery even back then. The one spot that had a good reputation was just downriver from Madisonville on that side of the river. There was a stretch of lily pads that held bass.

There’s a small inlet right across from Covington Country Club and then an oxbow for Tchefuncta CC just down from that. You might try those.

We used the river more for skiing/skimboarding or as a way to go explore before we got driver’s licenses. You used to be able to drive a jonboat or skiff through drainage tunnels that ran under I-12 with very little room on either side and hardly enough room to stop and turn around on the other side. Stupid kids doing stupid things.

When I was a kid we did pretty well on the stretch from Flower Estates down to Old Landing. We used to kill it with fly's and poppers floating and wading from Bush Folsom Rd down to Tantela Ranch.

Do you guys know of any places that I could take kids fishing? Don't have a boat so I am looking for bank fishing. We have tried Lake Road in Lacombe but never any luck and way too many people.
