I have a chance to get a Colt Python but it’s in serious need of a refinish. Anyone ever done this before?

are you buying this as an investment or as a gun to shoot?

I've reblued a Marlin 30/30.

did not turn out very well. I was a kid when I tried it however.

I would be very careful about refinishing the gun if you are buying it for investment purposes.

there's a local place that can do it. the can reblue it or strip it and to a nickel plating.

LINK

NICKEL ELECTROLYTIC – VERY DURABLE AND WATER RESISTANT, IT HAS BEEN AROUND THE INDUSTRY FOREVER
Matte With Flaw Removal $250.00
Brushed Flats/Matte Rounds 400 Grit Polish $250.00
Brushed 100% $265.00

HOT BLUE FINISH – THE CLASSIC FINISH OF THE FIREARMS INDUSTRY
Matte With Flaw Removal $210.00
Brushed Flats/Matte Rounds 400 Grit Polish $210.00
100% Brushed Polished $225.00

that's a lot of money though.

i've been watching these Perma-Blue videos on youtube and i'm not so sure that's the way i want to go.

No I haven't, but I've heard from other people that have and from speaking with them I would go pay the $200 to get it done.

I did a cold blue on an old Ruger Security Six 357 mag that my uncle gave me because it was rusted as hell. It don't look like much but it is a wheel gun I use when walking in the woods for hogs. It is reliable, but it is a beater gun so the blueing did not matter much. On something like a Colt Python then I would have it professionally done. That is like having a Ferrari and using a rattle can to paint it

If this pistol needs said rebluing, how much of an investment can it be? I would question the internal condition if it looks that bad.

I rust blued something. Turned out great. Not hard just time consuming.

Are there any gunsmith recommendations for Nickel Plating a pistol? Has anyone had a gunsmith nickel plate a pistol and were they happy with the end product?

You might be reducing the value by rebluing. A lot of folks won't consider it a collectible once that happens. That's probably a 40-50% the way it is. I would talk to a collector or look up similar non-reblued and reblued sales on Gunbroker to see. Putting an authentic grip might increase the value more.

I helped a buddy strip an old rifle and then cold blue it a few years ago. It took most of a Saturday afternoon and the finished product looked decent (decent enough for an old hog gun). But if you take it out on a humid day it will rust through the blueing. I wouldn’t waste my time doing it again, especially if it’s on a valuable firearm.

did you see the pictures? it's in serious need of a refinish. i wouldn't be surprised if it's not pitting around the frame at the hammer.
