With a python, I’d absolutely contact Colt.

If Colt refinished the gun, it definitely would not negatively effect the value.

I'd send it to Colt custom shop if anything investment related

Colt is no longer working on Pythons.

Save your money and buy a better example. That gun has entered ‘rough shooter’ / truck gun status and even with some type of refinish you will never recoup your cash outlay.

It also looks like someone modified or bent the hammer spur.

The stocks are cheap non-factory replacements.

I have a chance to get a Colt Python but it’s in serious need of a refinish. Anyone ever done this before?

What is the seller asking, or what is purchase price ?
That pistol is a shooter, no where near “collector” condition. If you end up buying that Colt, send it to a professional that refinishes firearms for a living. I had Metalloy Industries in Berryville, AR refinish a Colt 1911 Combat Commander and a Remington 40x action ... extremely pleased with their work.

it's currently at $699. if i can get it blued for another $200ish and buy some original grips (or replicas), my dream of having a python will be complete.

was their quote $495 to refinish the pistol you intend to buy ?

if they can make the Python look like those "after" pictures for 5 bills, spend the money and do it right ! IMO, a $200 refinish job on the Python will look like a $99 Fact-O-Bake paint job on a 1963 Corvette Coupe

Just go into it with your eyes open. You will have spent $1200+ on a gun that will still be worth around $699 when you are done. And don’t forget the hammer has been modified on that one.

Factory Type 2 target stocks for that era Python run around $250 for a nice set on ebay.

Lots of good shooter Pythons available for around $1500+ for less hassle.

But if this is the gun for you and you want to bring it back to life and don’t mind spending money, go for it!

The guys words were

quote:

Without seeing it, it would be $475. I have some that don’t require prep time and some that do. I have a Katrina Python that’s got 36 hours of prep time. So it just depends.

I wouldn’t say the one I’m interested in is “Katrina bad” but it’d be close. It is located in Gulfport. He also mentioned that along with the refinishing, they check the action and timing to ensure it’s in all working order.
