Anybody shoot Norma Oryx?

I’m a Hornady Interlock aka American Whitetail guy for all my rifles BUT it’s getting harder and harder to find and when you do the cost is insane. Norma seems to be surging and the .308 oryx are 16$ a box @ PSA website. The reviews seem legit.

I believe they used to make Weatherby ammo.

Possibly, I’m fairly confident the weatherby ammo is or was hornady interlock bullets….. I think.

It's a 150g .308 bullet. It will kill ANY dear you find in Louisiana, even if it wasn't a hunting bullet sitting in the end, and this one has a good bullet in it. Norma makes good stuff. I am a HUGE Hornady fan but others still make great ammo.

Shoot without worry. They are great bullets that give partition-like performance. They open quick and penetrate well. I'll be trying to poke one through an elk in a few months.
Norma makes excellent stuff and they don't get the love they deserve.

Solid ammo
Brass is a bit soft so don't hot rod or push the velocity extremes when reloading. This will cause the primer pockets to expand, making the brass useless. Find your accuracy node and stick to it

Weatherby loads Hornady, Nosler, Barnes, etc

Are you concerned about the bullet or the ammo manufacturer? Quality control during the loading process is the important factor. Most any bullet will punch through a deer.

I'd like to contribute that a 230gr oryx out of a 338 win mag will always exit based on my studies

if your rifle likes them, buy a few boxes and you're set for a lifetime of hunts.

I load my own stuff and Hornady Interlocks are the main bullet that I’ve used most over the years, I’ve always had good accuracy and kill success with it and the few that I’ve recovered from animals have retained 70% or more of their original weight.
But I did order 5 boxes of the Norma cartridges you referred to that PSA has on sale because I’ve known guys that have used them and bragged on their performance and I keep multiple boxes of factory ammo to have for back up when primers and other supplies get low. I don’t think a guy can ever have too many rounds of good ammo.
My research indicates that Norma has produced ammo for Weatherby corporation for years so that’s a good sign, the Oryx bullets are bonded and references indicate they retain almost 100% of their weight which is rare when the bullet isn’t all copper. I’ve used Norma brass and am pleased with it and at $16.99 a box, it’s a deal I didn’t pass up, might need to go order more.

It’s more about the bullet for me. I know Norma makes quality ammo, my concern was with bullet selection. I’ve. Never shot the oryx bullets so I figured I’d ask the baws about their experiences. That said, I’ve never had issues with Weatherby ammo accuracy or weight retention so they can’t be bad. If the oryx and the interlock are similar then I’ll be plenty happy with the performance.

I started using it because it was what I could get and ended up liking it so much I bought more after shooting a deer with them.
Norma has made some big investments in getting better market share in the USA and I think we'll be seeing people switch to Norma more and more in the coming years.

They definitely came in clutch during the shortages, I’m thinking they were able to source European primers when domestics were struggling. Then they just had to ship it here to become a household name, and they have. My M77 270 shoots MOA with the whitetail psps, those oryx loads are probably the same charge with a tougher bullet and I wouldn’t hesitate.

Norma is very popular in Europe and also among hunters in Africa.
The only rub I’ve heard about the Oryx is that some argue that they aren’t made for long range. The ballistic coefficient and design don’t compare well to ballistic tip designs like the Scirocco, TTSX and others.
Some African PH’s also don’t care for the big Oryx bullets (375 or larger) as they complain that the fast mushrooming doesn’t get much penetration in low velocity big bores.

The interlock is not a bonded bullet.
From John Barsness, answering a question about effectiveness on elk or moose:
“They're fine bullets, but like some (but by no means all) bonded bullets they tend to open very widely, which means that even though Oryx bullets retain a lot of weigh (those I've recovered average 89%) they don't penetrate as deeply as some other "premiums."
Which also means that if you're one of those who prefers (demands?) an exit hole, they're more likely to stop under the hide on the far side, rather than punch through. But the wide mushroom also means they make a big hole in the innards, so kill pretty well.
On the other hand, the ballistic coefficient isn't very high, due to the rather blunt soft--point, so they're perhaps not the best choice for ranges beyond 400 yards. I've had very good luck with them up to 400, since they expand pretty easily even when started at moderate muzzle velocities.”

That’s cheaper than any brass target ammo I can find

They definitely would not be my first choice for dangerous game, or something where I might be a little under-gunned. They open up very fast when impacting bone at high velocity.
They should be really great for deer in any Caliber. They definitely do not have a sexy shape to them like a Hornady ELD or anything, but they are simply designed to be a good general purpose big game hunting bullet. I think they accomplish that greatly.
