I'm in Central La. and as kids we learned how to shot chasing wood cock. Last 10-15 yrs seems like they've disappeared. Damn good eating and a Bon temp to hunt!

This is private. We've hunted them before here just kicking them up walking around but seriously, what I saw this last weekend was more than I've seen in my entire life. You boys down south are probably gonna be neck deep in them once the season opens up.

Got a buddy with a GSP that's going to jizz his pants when I bring them out here and they see this.

No quail of course, but woodcock galore.

gonna have to go check the ex-mother0in-law's place at dusk. It is a spectacular fly-out zone for the Cock o' the wood. Too bad you can't shoot them after official sundown.

When I was a kid, we used to pound them at that time. SOB's were thick. Was no problem to shoot a hundred in the evening. This was way back in the 1960's.

What you talking about Willis.

We used BB guns. One shot = to about 300 BB's.

Would sit on the levee at dusk to count how many flew out, and it was less and less over the past few years.
You usually see them right when it gets good for woodies.

My dad had Brittany's way back in the day that he used to hunt them with. Back in the 80's and early 90's. I'm too young to remember it. He quit once his two dogs died. I've only seen them a handful of times and he swears they were all over the place back then. Damned shame. I wish they'd come back.

To the contrary, I see less and less of my woodcock every year that goes by.

Weird. I normally see quite a few on this place. But nothing like what I saw last weekend coming out of the woods right after dark. Never seen anything like that before and I spent a lot of time hunting them with pointers as a kid in the 70s.

and I just read it again and dammit...

Wish I would have known about you and your dogs before we sold our property. Always a decent amount of woodcock and a few coveys every now and then.
