chool Senior in NWLA killed a Bald Eagle. by Rando
I'll never forget, I was about 11 and scoped in on what I thought was a chicken hawk in the top of a cypress behind the house.

Something told me not to pull the trigger. Turned out to be a young eagle without his color yet

The hawk was likely protected too

They don’t play with bald eagles. Had one found dead on my catfish ponds and they did a huge investigation because they found one lead pellet in it. They thought one of my employees shot it, had to prove we only use buy steel shot per my predatory permit. Then an autopsy revealed it didn’t die from the pellet it was in the bird for months, it flew into a powerline. Which is what I told them likely happened as it was laying under the power line but nooo they had to make an ordeal out of it.

Not to condone what the kid did....but there are parts of the country where I see more Bald Eagles than Red Tails.

Certainly punish him/fine him but I pull up short of trying to ruin a kids life over making a mistake as a 18 year old.

I was told that if you have chickens you can shoot hawks, dogs or anything that is killing them. Something about livestock laws.

Never heard about it before then though. I doubt an eagle or wolf would fall under that same ordeal though. This is in Mississippi, I also wouldn’t go before a judge banking on just what that guy told me to be fact.

I can easily imagine an 18 year old male doing something stupid and then exponentially amplifying it.

No. He won't. He won't go in front of some podunk local parish or state judge, but will appear in front of a US magistrate in federal court. He's screwed.

The Possum Sheriffs don't mess around with bald eagles, we were always told it was a minimum $10,000 fine.

The fuq? You know how many 18 yo made mistakes and murdered people and serve the maximum sentence for it? A lot. Why should this adult not be eligible for the maximum sentence?

It's a colloquial term for red-tailed hawk, and they're still illegal as Hell to kill.

Either way, it's illegal to kill a hawk.

Bought a Belgium A5 from an old farmer about 20 yrs ago south of Lake Chas. Asked him how many ducks he killed with it, he said none, just chicken hawks

Pretty sure, at least in Louisiana, you can’t shoot a hawk for killing your chickens. I think you have to get a special permit or something after you have shown you tried to mitigate the hawk.

It may be the same in Mississippi. I know I was surprised when he told me that

Love those Belgian A5s. I have my great grandfathers from like the 1930s, still in mint condition not a scratch on it looks like it was bought off the shelf yesterday.

Rarely shoot it, I’ll take it dove hunting bout once a year. Can’t shoot ducks as the barrel isn’t made for steel shot
