Am I bonkers for considering throwing small crickets with a fly rod?

I’m a beginning fly fisherman who has largely always used a guide’s gear. Recently picked up my first rod and reel recently.
I want to fish for freshwater panfish this Saturday with my new rod. I don’t own any flies yet and no store near me. Could one tie on a very small hook and throw crickets instead? I know the fish will hit them floating by.

I've caught perch with a hook, bobber and sinker on the tippet and used the flyrod kinda like a cane pole. Fly fishing with just a live cricket will lose a lot of crickets on the backcast.
A gentle roll cast may work with just a hook and cricket if you can do that technique.

We used to use small chunks of Catalpa worms on a fly rod with floating line, a 18-24” 2-4# mono leader and a #6 bream hook. The worm chunk would slow sink and the floating line was like a cork. Catalpa chunks are tough as hell and you could sling em awhile before needing a new chunk. But alas, Catalpa worms are more scarce than gold bars down here now

How long does it take for Amazon to get delivered?
Thor Outdoor Dave's Hopper Fly Fishing Set, Size #10 – Topwater Terrestrial Dry Flies for Bass, Panfish, Trout Amazon
I don’t think a cricket would hold up to cast

That is what I was thinking too.
Maybe if I hooked them through the head and chest? Dunno.

take a q tip dipped in acetone dab it on the cricket then superglue and lay the hook on the cricket where the glue and acetone are applied. The acetone is an accelerator and the glue will dry very fast

My Uncle used to catch tons of brim with a small white spotted popping bug with some green and white feathers out the back. Some of these should work good too

My friend caught an 18" brown trout on pizza crust on a fly rod over the weekend. Burn it a bit so it gets some color marks

That's how my dad used to do it. He'd find bream beds with his fly rod then move in and let the kids get after it with cane poles.

If it's on a fly rod you're supposed to call it a strike indicator
OP idk where you're at but I've found bream killers at gas stations in South LA before.

Yep little 3 pack of popping flies. Kids and I throw them on regular rods with a small cork. Bream wear them out.

It’s only crazy if it doesn’t work.

Not crazy. I've done it and caught bluegill using crickets and a fly rod. Have caught yearling bass that way too. Both put up a good fight on a fly rod.

Do you guys use bugs that sink or float?

Both
A wooly worm is a great fly for bream. I tie them myself and use very bright colors for them.

That’s a great price. Just what I need, more flys
