I have the same model, RWD Honda lawnmower is nothing like a typical FWD self-propelled lawnmower. I have no problems maneuvering the mower and the drive control makes it easy to adjust how fast the mower goes.

Damn prices for these things are all over the damn place.
Is a self propelled going to be significantly more expensive?

I have this one. Would buy it again 100 out of 100 times.

Is that why all landscapers use self-propelled mowers? They typically have both, but almost exclusively use the self-propelled.

OP: Do not get a front wheel drive one. RWD only

$300 Toro from Home Depot.

I had one of these with the Kohler engine and got a solid 10 years out of it. You can get them with Honda or Briggs and Stratton motors also but they cost a little more. I bought one with the Honda engine and I think it was about $450.

I have a Honda self-propelled that’s more than 20 years old and still incredibly reliable. Other than changing the blade and air filter I’ve never had to do anything to it. Still starts on the first pull. It and a string trimmer are all you need.

look at the snapper rear engine riders

they come in 25" 28" and 33" deck sizes and are small compact and perfect for those in-betweeen yards too big to push and too small for big 42" riding tractor mowers

find something like this in your area on facebook marketplace LINK

if you keep watch you can find a nice one for $300-$400

or if you would rather new, the new ones have been redesigned to be more comfortable to get on and off them LINK

and a video demo LINK

Whatever you get, make sure it has a Honda engine.

Lowe's has a Toro with a Honda engine self-propelled for $299 and Home Depot has a Honda for $399.

Either of these will give you years of good service if you change the oil and air filters and use non-ethanol gas.

I bought a Craftsman 11 years ago. Not one issue with it and even after being up for the winter, starts by the fourth pull every year.

Four pulls?

Hondas only take one.

How big is your lot as and how much is grass?

I am on the push side over a cheaper self propelled. If you get a push with the big wheels, they can be literally easier than a self propelled.

Most importantly, even though they are adjustable, make sure you get one that fits your arms and height. The self propelled are only great for larger swath. If you have a lot of small patches where you have to push the self propelled they can become a pain.

Also the large wheels can be very nice if you have a lot of holes.

The other negative about self propelled is some of them are slow. I can mow faster with a self push almost every time.

If you are on .25 or smaller I'd go push. If you are on closer to .35-.4 or so I'd go self propelled.

Husqvarna with a Honda engine is what I have. Should fit in your budget.

Don't discount the workout you'll get with just a pusher. Nothing like getting your workout on at 7am on a July morning.

Honda 230cc from Lowes.

It is self-propelled but you can turn it off and get a little hp back into your blade. The speed is also adjustable depending on how far you hold down the “clutch bar” on the handle.

I’ve had it for about 10 months and it always starts on first pull. When I took it out after winter this year, it actually took 3 pulls.

Only use the premix non-ethanol gas.

The only complaints are that it doesn’t get low enough to scalp, and the bag is a little too small, imo.

Light mower

Buy a super light mower like this one. I can cut my lawn faster with a light mower than a self propelled. Self propels are slow.

I own above mower and its going on 9 years old. Starts on first pull every time.

Go with the Husqvarna self propelled with the Honda engine. Just like the other guys that recommended this. I have had mine two years and for the price is great quality.

I had just had another thought, if you are going to bag your clippings then self propelled is better. It sucks pushing around a heavy bag of clippings.

+1 on the Honda engine.

I'm not a self-propelled guy myself either...I find they don't go fast enough for me...but that was from my last SP mower back in the 1980s...I'm sure tech has improved.

After having 2 B/S mower carbs replaced due to ethanol...I can't state it more...never ever run ethanol gas in a mower/chainsaw/weedeater etc...it's like playing Russian roulette with your carb...it's not if it's gonna give you trouble...it's when.

And for me personally...I'll never own another B/S engine again. Honda or Kawasaki only.
