Off-topic but what handgun and what caliber?

This is my first year hunting with a Contender in 7-30 Waters

You've got a FINE handgun for deer. What bullet are you using? Have you got a deer yet??

I started w/ a Contender in 35 Rem. Decided I wanted something that shot flatter for a handgun pronghorn antelope hunt so I got a 6.5 JDJ, but the 7x30 was a finalist. I killed a bunch of deer w/ the 6.5. A few years back I transitioned to XP's. Now I'm using XP's in 260 Rem, 7-08 and 284 Win. In between those, using handguns I've killed deer 14 different calibers and 34 different bullets. The Contender is a really nice platform w/ a lot of versatility.

Shooting 130 gr. Speer HotCor's over 33 gr. H335 for about 2,250 MV. Shot one doe at about 50 yards - she took 5 steps and fell over.

I shoot the 130 speer hot cor in my dad’s old 270. Very accurate and good blood trails . I load them over IMR4064.
I bought some 180’s for my 300 but haven’t loaded them yet. Not sure how they will hold up at that velocity.
The accubonds will do for now .

We shoot 140 gr Core Lokt out of the 6.5 and it’s been great

7mm-08 vs 6.5 CM for youth

There’s basically no difference in end result. Recoil should be about the same with both using 140gr bullets. The 6.5CM will be slightly better in terms of it dropping less and retaining energy better due to more aerodynamic shape and it should penetrate a little better due to higher sectional density.

I personally would choose the 6.5 out of those two. Basically the same at normal hunting distances, but 6.5 is slightly better performance (splitting hairs) and I think the ammo selection and availability is better for the 6.5.

Built my PA10 in 7-08

My logic:
already had a 7-08 in Savage Mod 11 and I don't want too many similar cartridges floating around the house and truck.
I've always been sweet on 308 based cartridges.
Slightly bigger hole = bigger leak.

Ammo selection and price seems to be better for the CM.

Aero #'s are better on the 6.5 but that shouldn't ever come into play for most hunters. If you're one that does get to play with those distances, I envy you.

110gr Barnes TTSX is deadly out of the 270.

Congrats on your kill! I shot both Speer 130 gr bullets in my 7-08 and thought they were a little "hard" and didn't expand up to my expectations. I loaded the rest of them in my 284 Win XP since because is has a couple hundred more fps muzzle velocity. Since my handguns lose a couple hundred fps muzzle velocity compared to rifles, I like to run bullets that would normally be a little "light" for the caliber. In my 7-08 I really like the 120 gr Sierra SPT Pro-Hunter, 120 gr Nosler Ballistic and 120/110 gr Barnes TTSX. I'd think all of them would work well in your Waters. I once had a Waters barrel for my Contender, but never took any game w/ it. The bullet I loaded for was the 130 gr Sierra Single Shot Pistol bullet, but it was discontinued.

7mm-08, if it aint broke don't fix it.

With that said, they're very similar, the bullet makes more of a difference than the caliber. If you get a good hunting bullet it doesn't matter.

Nosler Partition is the standard, find one that performs like it and you're good.

stories of those who shoot the 6.5cm and lose a blood trail are far too many

My son bought one and lost his deer last season. He does not care for it at all. He wants my 30-06 that he got his first deer from.

I’d get them 308 rifles. Will kill any deer and ammo is plentiful.

Then your son either made a bad shot or he bought the wrong ammo.

It’s one of those or both. Period.

ETA:

I will add that having confidence in what you are shooting definitely plays a factor in it but the only way to build confidence is to use it.

Tell him to get a box of Barnes ammo. If he can shoot, he'll never have another issue killing deer with the 6.5 Needmore.

Don't know what to tell you, other than most are either bs or people think they can shoot and they really can't.

And throw more fuel on the fire. Here is a 10+ year old thread about match bullet kills.

I’ll throw on some more fuel. Why do those of you who hunt where you need magic bullets and massive blood trails to recover deer that run insist on shooting them in the heart/lungs? Shoot whatever bullet you have on hand into the fricking neck and go pick up your deer from where it was standing.

Should have said, I'm not really advocating using match bullets for hunting. Just that they'll work if you do your part.

Snipers using a 200gr .308 on antelope or 300gr .338 on mule deer isn't exactly the same as people giving their shaky kids a CM with a match bullet

Did miss all the 308/175 or 168? The 243 with a 70gr? See anyone the 223 with 69gr?

Just said if you do your part, it's not the bullet or the caliber.
