was at the new Wally World today in Watson and was talking guns with the outdoor manager feller. i have been thinking about getting this or the .444 marlin in the handi rifle.
they didnt have either in stock but could order them and my price is $269.
which round would the outdoor board folks go with?

I like the 45/70 Govt over the 444. Theres a history and nostalgia you get with the 45/70.
The real difference here is range, the Whelen has a lot more downrange potential than the 444.

I've got the .444 & love it. It kicks like a mule though

.35 Whelen is the tits. Got one in an Encore barrel with a Weaver Grand Slam scope. I love the combo. It puts football size holes in animals.

Whatever you do, DO NOT... I mean DO NOT get a ported barrel with whichever caliber you choose. My first Whelen was ported, and it's the only gun I've ever taken hunting that I accompanied with ear plugs. It was miserably loud.

There isn't any real advantage to the. 444 over anything if we're. Talking only about deerhunting.

.35>.444>.45-70
.35 is a ridiculous round for primitive hunting. It gives you range better than some of the common rifle calibers.
444 has a little better range than the 45-70 and a little less thump. I have a 444 HandiRifle.

35 whelen is the better if not the best legal primitive weapon thats available for miss. Its a 300 yd gun that is death on whatever you are hunting. I have a 45-70 and dont ever get it out of the safenow that I have one. 444 may be cheaper but 35 is better all around.

My next long gun will likely be a .35 whelen Apex. Uncle bought one for primitive and it's pretty sweet. He swears by it now.

i have numerous rifles and i like the little h&r my boy has. this will probably be the only rifle i hunt with this year.

Definitely the .444. Lotsa thump from that thing.

if you have a pipeline or open green fields the .35 is your choice. the 444 can be shot out to 300 yds if you do your homework. the 444 will kick less than the .35 and 45/70. I have the 444 in a h&R and hunt with it all year long.

I'm getting the .444 marlin for my birthday next week

The 35 is the best overall choice of the 3.I have on in HR and find that it shoots the Remington Corelokt 200 Gr most accurate.

I know a guy that hunted with a .444 by choice before any of this primitive stuff came up. He loved it. Deers died.

I got my .444 last year, and ended up taking it a lot during regular season. I only need one shot... most of the time.
