If it shoots core locks well than use that. .30-30 is one of the only calibers I'll ever recommend corelockts for. I've only shot deer with the 170s, but the 150's should be just fine.

Just don't get see through mounts. Get a 2-7 power scope instead.

150 grain Remingtons

I've killed plenty of deer with my 30-30, but I only use it as a brush gun. Every shot has been with in 70 yards.

Been shooting a Marlin 30-30 for 20+ years. Only use Winchester 150 grain bullets. Never had to track a deer yet. They always fall within sight of the stand unless its a neck shot, those drop in their tracks.

How many deer have you shot with them?

I shot 3 or 4, seen 15-20 shot with them in various calibers. Poor results far more often than good results.

Everyone should own a Winchester Model 94.

IIRC, the 336s took a shite as of late. Is that right? I got mine in the late 90s, and it has been perfect

Same here. My Pow Pow left it to me from his death bed. Marlin model 336 he bought not long after returning from WW2. He killed 1 deer with it in his life and I was there with him when I was 10 years old or so and it is in pristine condition. I have not hunted with it since his passing in the mid 90's, but I may this year just to kill 1 deer and then hang it back up.

I switched from Core Lokts to Barnes a couple years ago (shoot Barnes in my 30-06 and 35 Whelen). The gun seemed to like them . Killed a nice sow pig at 100+ yds. Then last year went to sight in and the Barnes were flying in every direction but straight. Don't know what the problem was but went back to Core Lokts and all is good.

I have a "Remlin" 336 and it's been flawless as a shooter. The reason these rifles had such problems when Remington bought Marlin was due to how poorly Marlin documented the dimensional specs of their rifles. Took a long time to get the production tooling up to modern standards and gain the institutional knowledge of Marlin's rifles.

had the damn gun sighted in beautifully with 170 grain Winchester soft points, hitting a little lefy of center but tighly grouped.

If those shot well, just go back to using them.

If your rifle hits paper at 100 yards, there is no need to bore sight. That would be backing up. You just have a little tuning to do.

Get more of those 170's that shot well. Shoot a couple 3 shot groups. If they make good groups, fine tune the rifle for that and go shoot some deer.

Some of them are down right hideous looking. I know not all of the models are the same, but the lower cost ones make me want to with the color of the blueing and the shitty lumber the attach to them.

Every OB'er knows what is more important is the quality of your rifle stock because you're going to need it to club your deer to death when that 250lb swamp buck shakes off the ol .30-30 bullet.

Because it's not blueing. It's tougher and for a rifle that costs $200 or so it's perfectly fine. If I want better furniture for a beater rifle, I'll buy a non-beater rifle. If you want a nice lever-action, go drop a few thousand on any one of those that custom build them to order. If you want a cheap, easy to carry rifle that shoots well...336 is just fine.

My ex bought me the Wally World one back in high school. It has held up well, and I carry it over my shoulder through some thick stuff. Definitely not a safe queen, but I honestly can't say I've seen a 336 that was

Absolutely no need to. My 336 was round about $300 back in '01. I'm not sure what that equals today with inflation and all, but it ain't thousands. I'm not talking collectors item guns here. All I'm saying is they got cheap with the fit and finish of their rifles. Marlin used to put the same finish on their budget model guns as their flagship model.

Not about need, there are companies that make beautiful rifles chambered in odd calibers. If you want a heirloom lever gun in .500 S&W and have $3,000+ burning a whole in your wallet, go for it. Marlin was going out of business. If Remington didn't buy it then it wouldn't exist today. They made the 336's something anyone can buy and they aren't bad. I don't care if they aren't well blued, blueing is a crap finish for a gun that you can toss in the truck or ATV and beat up. The new finish is better for a utilitarian rifle. My 336 has a XS rail and a cheap scope on it and shoots small holes no matter what I feed it. If I get tired of the crappy wood it has I'll put in an order to Boyd for a laminate stock to match some of my other rifles.
