The three people were reported in good condition and brought back to Port Fourchon to meet awaiting EMS.
“The fact that they had a VHF radio greatly assisted in us finding the three people quickly and making sure they were safe,” said Lt. Cmdr. Michelle Ferguson, Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator at Sector New Orleans. “We strongly recommended that if you are planning on going out on the water you have the proper safety equipment in the event an accident happens.”

How rough were the seas today offshore? Dont look bad in the photos but the boat could have started taking on water for a number of reasons

Friend,

I live by axioms. One of my favorite axioms is:

quote:

If you are in open water in the Gulf of Mexico in a boat that has a trolling motor, you are a maroon.

Damn... pas bon.

There are days a bay boat goes to the rigs for snapper, Today was not one of those days.

To each his own.

I can't even recall how many times we've been out in a bay boat on good days. Loaded ice chests fishing the Rips for Tripletail, Dolphin et al just like Bass fishing with a Trolling Motor.

Be smart, pick your days, but Morons we are not. 30+ years offshore experience here.

Heard and read of many boats without Trolling Motors go down too. Being a Moron doesn't necessarily relate to the size of your boat.

Wind was blowing today at 15-20 knts. A bay boat should not have been in the gulf today.

I am not defending what happened today. We would not have gone out either.

I also can't count the times we've made it to the Mermentau or Calcasieu Jetties only to turn back because we are not morons. Hit Big Lake on the way home. Profit.

It’s relative.

On a good day, hitting the gulf in a decent sized bay boat (22’ or greater) is fine but you can’t go too far (15 miles max)......the weather/wind kicks up and you’ll be mowing a dangerous lawn.

Never been a boat owner, but just wondering how common it is for boat owners to carry an EPIRB on board.

A good friend of mine lost his dad at Catfish Lake one Easter. Since then I proceed with a hell of a lot more caution.

Been 50 miles out in my boat before. A good day with some sense and you can go from grand isle to the lump and back in a bay boat. Today was absolutely not the day to try it

I have a PLB onboard any time I'm saltwater fishing. That and seatow and radios with DSC are becoming much more common
