No anchor
No marine radio
No Epirb or similar device
While an anchor may have helped there are not Coast
guard Heli's on standby in north MS nor many folks on 16 who can be of assistance.
While EPIRB's are recomended it would have not necessarily have made a bit of difference, EPIRBS are intended for someone to find survivors within 24 hours not rescues from iminent danger.

The lock control room at the dam has a marine radio and would monitor 16 as well as significant numbers of commercial vessels that travel the area. More importantly, if all members of the tournament had one they could communicate quickly with one another.
Inland boaters seem to think a cell phone is a good plan in an emergency and its not. A radio call would that could be heard by the dam, a tug, or 20+ other boats would be a much better way to get help in an emergency.
Epirb not necessarily useful in this situation but several instances in recent news have involved boaters having accidents and being stuck on or in the water with no means of communication. My point was simply the complete lack of any foresight regarding safety equipment needed in case of an accident.

They aren't going to respond quickly, if they respond at all, if they even hear it. They will most likely call us and 911. They are there to run the lock and are very lightly staffed. We don't listen to marine radio and our boats are hardly ever in the water. Operating the gates is very time consuming, so they aren't going to shut in an emergency.
Lesson is don't go near the dams, they are dangerous and no fish is worth it.

I'm kinda surprised they wouldn't shut down that boat ramp especially for a tournament? Why launch by the dam like that when there has to be others available right? I mean I now hindsight and all, but just saying no one is going to fish next to the damn with flood stage water conditions, so no reason to launch there IMO.

Go back a page and look at the satellite view picture. It's a big state park marina right there and it's not on top the powerhouse or the spillway. A boat with a working motor won't have an issue staying away from the spillway.

It's probably .75 - 1 mile from the ramp to the gates

if all you have is a trolling motor, why not simply fish the bank along the boat dock side up river. if trolling motor goes out at lease you are up stream and can drift back down toward the launch?
REALLY BAD FORETHOUGHT

Radio's, phones, epirb, flares etc would not have gotten help there in time. The only thing that would, would be:
1. Not getting in that current.
2. A safety chain to hold onto.
Cold water kills quick.

From the time they got caught in the current it was probably 30 minutes by my guess.
They may not have realize the trouble they were in at 1st and might not have called immediately but 30 mins is a pretty decent guess.
It was an hour and 15 min (from what I’ve heard). 45 min to get out of the cove to the river. 30 min in the current.

Anybody know how far downriver from the dam this would be?
So sad.

All 3 bodies recovered.
Very, very sad news. Thoughts and prayers for the families involved.

Sad indeed. At least now the families can finally get closure and bury their loved ones instead of the hell they've been going through for the past few weeks.
