I just don’t understand how a big pontoon boat capsized. Every one I’ve ever been on was extremely stable. Such a terrible tragedy.

There's some pics on the Zachary Fire Department facebook page showing the pontoons (bottom) sticking up, like was stated before the blind did a 180 roll.

Terrible

Once you enclose the top they become top heavy. Add 7 hunters all on one side and current I can see where it would easily flip.

There were 7 people? Everything I’ve seen said 4.

If it flipped, unlike what the news is alluding to then having on life jackets would have made it worse and may have been the main issue. With heavy clothes and a life jacket it would of been very difficult to get out from under a flipped blind, you would not be able to swim under and out with the life jacket on.

Not sure why having a second door would make much of a difference? Very unfortunate situation.

So would be like a boxstand with a roof? I would imagine it would be hard to shoot out of something like this.

This is a heartbreaking story. Prayers for all involved.

Even people that are properly trained to egress in this type of situation - FAIL - cold dark/murky water - it's nearly impossible to even tell which way is up - finding the door/window is even more difficult. Once dunked you don't have much time to analyze where you are, what happened and what to do... even if you practiced it - if you haven't the odds of surviving are astronomically low. PFD can't help you find the exit.

I'd assume like any other boat blinds with a door on one side to enter and then either flip open doors on top or open air top?

If it was only 6-7 feet deep it's very possible they couldn't exit the bottom (top of blind) due to it being bottomed out?

I'd assume the kid had a life jacket on as he was 8. I'm guessing the demise of at least one of the adults was trying to help the kid out. It's likely either the kid or mom was by the door as they were last one in although one person did escape? If the person by the door was panicking it would of been almost impossible for anyone to escape.

The biggest safety issue was likely that those blinds aren't made to escape if they are flipped usually. It could have been very easy and they panicked or had too much gear on, or almost impossible to escape.

Not sure if it had a roof but I think it had metal roofing for the sides. So when it capsized they couldn’t get from under the boat.

Terrible tragedy...Father Scott made an announcement in Mass yesterday in Woodville about praying for a family involved in a duck hunting accident. Gave me goosebumps knowing we have a similar floating blind on our place.

yeah, i just can't see how structured walls like that on a blind is now any sort of good idea with this knowledge.

We knew adding the back wall would affect stability, so we capped some 8" drain pipes and secured them to rear pontoon to make it stable again. Accidents happen no matter what though..

This thought makes me sick.

We all know there are some risks in enjoying the outdoors, but I never really thought about them until my boys started going with me.

I hope the man finds some comfort.

The netting prevented everyone from escaping.

There were 7 and 4 managed to free themselves. Darrin’s wife was there and barely escaped.

Such a fricking horrible death. That wife, kid was scared and terrified. Such a fricked up way to die. They didn't deserve that. Especially the kid.

makes me sick to my stomach hearing about this. Found out this morning that an old co-worker of mines wife is related to the family involved. My heart aches for them. This is absolutely brutal.
