I was wondering if anyone has heard when the Army is going to award the new ammunition. They are trying to decide between the 6.5 Credmoor and Sig Sauer’s new 277 Fury. I really hope they go the 277 Fury route because the specs on that round sound incredible.

What makes it more incredible than the 8,764 other calibers out there?

It has a bimadel case to handle higher pressure. So instead of ~<65,000 psi it is handling ~80,000 psi.

Basically has the same ballistics of a 270 win out of a 24” barrel, but it is doing that out of a 16” barrel. Theoretically you would be close to the 270 wsm when using a standard 22-24” barrel.

Hopefully that made sense. Essentially due to the higher pressures it mirrors the 270win but in a much shorter package.

That’s the one with the strange case supposed to load like 80,000 psi, probably gonna blow up some m4s

Won’t be in the m4s. It is based on a 308 and is going to be in a purpose built Sig rifle.

OP. I don’t know if / when announcements will be made but supposedly it is on the shortlist / last 2 still being evaluated.

If it’s AR 10 then just give me the .308.

Keep the m4s issues 77grn smks instead of green tip or whatever they use now

What is actually exciting about the 277 fury is that SAAMI has approved / designated it. They had to make a new process for the higher pressures.

But now that they have other cartridges may be made in it. So you could end up with a 7mm-08 Fury that has the ballistics of the 7 mag or 7 wsm. And so on.

I cant wrap my head around the muzzle blast of a 80ksi round out of a 16" barrel

What’s the recoil? Isn’t that one of the reasons they went to 556 - reduced recoil allowed more shots on target

I think the assumption for the 16-in version is that a can is part of the equation.

Not really. The western is loaded with much heavier bullets and because of the case design the fury has much better magazine capacity.

The tech is cool, but the price per round has to be pretty bad with the stainless base, and you probably can't reload them conventionally.

Why not just make the whole case stainless, put an electronic ignitor on it, and run that bitch at 100,000 psi? Per round cost is out the window anyway.

Only a couple rounds are talked about and I doubt we see anything until the military makes their decision.

If they choose the fury it is going to be good for the round and basically guarantee it’s success but will make availability a long way out. They will have to supply the military with their orders before we ever get to see the round. If the military doesn’t choose it we should get ammo way sooner BUT the round will be more likely to die in the vine and never be produced. So who knows.

I'm not excited. For hunting purposes (I have no military purposes of any of my guns), I don't see any advantages it has over a number of other existing rounds.

Ahh... Sounds so pleasent to shoot for the common grunt as well, who likely won't have a suppressor and has to carry 400 rds of half steel-cased 270 equivalents. The recoil sounds like rainbows and lollipops as well. It will be just like shooting a 17 Hornet!

In all seriousness, unless this is some SPR for Socom or something, just do away with the God-awful green tips and replace every platoon M4 with 77g TMK or SMKs, just like someone previously said.

I understand that the miitary is trying to upgrade to a more powerful standard round for potential conflicts with China/Russia and their body armor, but have y'all seen those videos of the that damn 6.8x51 NGSW?

LINK

The gun is probably 10+ lbs with a scope and can, and its the size of a Ar10, and it looks like a sledge hammer hitting a full grown man when firing, even in semi-auto. It also only holds 20rd mag capacity, which is exactly what Vietnam soldiers hated the early m16 so much because Commies with AKs and 30rd mags were destroying them in firefights.

Question is, if you want a bigger, longer range caliber for your common soldier, why not just improve on what POF has already started, with a small frame Sr25/Ar10 type rifle like the Rogue. LINK

It also seems Sig has nudey pictures of eveyone at the Pentagon lately. They basically get every contract now. Theres simply zero reason the P320 should have picked over the Glock 19x for a standard sidearm.

This can be said of most every new cartridge that comes out. They all offer some new niche, but is it really worth diluting the pool that much more?
