Honestly, I prefer my .270, but a .243 will do just fine.

I agree with this. I find the .270 as close to perfect as it gets for the areas I hunt in.

As far as a .243 for an 8 YO, the OP probably made the correct decision. Not a ton of recoil for a child that age.

If I had to pick one caliber to call the perfect whitetail deer caliber it would probably be .270 winchester. Only problem is it gets pretty nasty sometimes.

A lot of the .243 kills I can remember were damn nasty also.

Yall dont write off the .338 win mag or .375 h&h though. Its nice always getting an exit and if OP wasnt raising a pussy he wouldn't have to worry about getting exits either

Barnes TTSX for the .243. Im not a fan of them in larger rifles, I find they over penetrate with little expansion,

I load 110gr in my 270win. It's like lightening strikes a deer. 3500fps. It'll expand. And laser accurate.

.26moa at 200yds.

1st photo is 9 shots each a different charge weight across 4gr. 100yds

2nd Pic is 13 shots across 0.3gr at 100yds.

As for 243, it's killed more deer than probably any caliber. I bought a brand new in the box Tikka 243 I'll probably rebarrel to 7mm08 just because.

I have a savage youth model 243.....drives nails.....but it emphasizes shot placement. Pokes a small hole, but fast!

Throw in a 100gr Hornady Interlock or 95gr Fusion Tippped and he will be fine. Excellent little cartridge on deer at medium ranges.

I dropped a 10 point with a .243 in TX. It was a heart shot, definitely had no problems finding that dude.

Ok John Wayne….
243-90 grain bullet- doesn’t have impact of..
308-150 grain bullet
7-08-140 grain bullet

Much less damage = wounded deer

Keep up your “ marksmanship” small man syndrome BS…

Dead is dead. Shot placement is all that matters. I don't care if it's 223 or 338 Lapua. The only issue with small calibers is blood trail. You don't wound more though
