I know a guy pushing 50 that uses a .22-250. He still gets em. Guys kill them with 6 arc.
Hell I’m one of the 6.5 Grendel biggest fans.
.243 is an older cartridge, but kills all the same.

You missed the point
If you aren't confident in a caliber that's capable out to...oh idk 800 yards, I think you may have missed the point.
Distance .300 RUM 6.5 Grendel
100 yards. +1.1" +2.3"
200 yards. 0". 0"
300 yards -5.4" -9.1"
400 yards -15.7" -24.6"
500 yards -31.5" -48.9"
Even with .300 ultra mag, you still have to remember basic distances.
If you sight in your rifle at a distance that makes sense for you and your scope, you can make life a lot easier on yourself.
IE, everyone in my entire life always sighted their .22 in at 50 yards. That gives you less than a half inch high at 10, and 4in low at 70.
Or...sight in for 70. Why? You're still under 1inch off at 10 yards still less than a half inch at 25 and 50. And only 2in at 100.
Beyond that the drop is meh. But within the 100, it makes more practical sense to sight in for 70.
Just did this with the kids .300 blackout. Sight it in at 100 and all your distances are negative and you're calculating drop past 140. Sight it in 1inch low at 200 and all of your distances from 50 to 225 are less than 2.5 inches different. No need to calculate.

I know I'm usually contrarian for the sake of being so...
But take a look at the ballistics of 300 win mag and 7mm mag vs a .243 out to say ... 500 yards
You're in for a pleasant surprise.

know most people say they do fine on Whitetail deer but I don't know anyone who has personally used it. Got 3 different boxes of 100g to sight in and see what it likes. Little nervous it will lack the needed power or not expand sufficiently at 100yrd.
I bought one for my lil brother when he was 10 and he’s now 40 and one for my daughter when she was 8. Was just talking a while back with my bro about how many deer and pigs him and I have killed with his 243 and really one of the few guns we could honestly say we could not remember losing a deer with.
One of my all time favorite bullets for a long time was Nosler partions and they would jello the inside and most of the time exit.
The bad rap that 243 gets is because 90% of the new shooters shoot it and can’t find the deer. Deer was dead 50yd from impact but lil Johnny was so excited he had someone looking for it 100yd before or after the actual shot site.
Good luck to your kid and post some pics so some of these internet terminal ballistics techs can see deer are not bullet proof!!

A 243 is a lightning bolt out of Zeus’ hands
