This has become my new favorite way to kill small venomous snakes around the house. It's perfect for little rattlers and copper heads. My only complaint is the gun won't cycle. Setup is a 5.56 AR pistol (kids gun) with a CMMG 22LR conversion.

I'm pretty sure i know the answer to this, but has anyone tried this and gotten the gun to cycle? I assume the gas is inefficient because of the shot load. But curious is anyone has drilled the gas port or anything like that to fix it? I run adjustable blocks on everything, and while it's done wonders for my other AR builds to open up the port then tune the gas with the block, i just don't think this will solve the problem on this one.

Happy to hear any feedback .

I have only gotten them to work in a revolver. My semi autos just won’t feed them. Killed a many of rat with them. So much fun.

I have a 10-22 that would cycle and feed the old crimp style. During the many ammo shortages, all I could find were the plastic tip shot shells. Started using them in a bolt action as the 10-22 would not cycle them. I recently found the crimp style but have not tried them yet in the Ruger.

thats good info. I only have the plastic tip ones but will try to crimp style and see if that helps.

Probably that it’s a shot shell and .22 is a super dirty round.

I think it’s more shot shell. Gun cycles on great anything but subs and it was freshly cleaned.

Maybe it not cycling on subs is symptomatic and I do need to give it more gas. But the block is wide open so my only option is opening the port. I might be drilling it to see. Worse case I tamp it down with the block.

There's a lot of .22lr that won't reliably run in a semiauto, be it shot shells, Colibri, etc. Great reason to have both a revolver and a bolt action.

I have an old pump action but I really like the AR pistol with a can for this.

Might be good to give some context on what inspired this post
Tonight I went on a sunset pig run with my my nephew. Took out a few with the Creedmoor because I’m lazy, can post pics if desired. Came back to the house and there’s an 18ish in rattle snake by the fire pit. First shot missed because kids were running around and I pulled the shot. Then I ended up in manual cycle/ jam hell and it holed up behind a rock surrounding the pit.

Try decreasing friction.

A little tingsten disulfide powder mixed in with a aynthetic grease. Apply and cycle... A lot.

Then clean off and run dry.

Your buffer spring is too strong for shot shell loads. Shot shells are meant for close range.
I sure wouldn’t be shooting shot shells through a silencer……. Bad medicine.
My suggestion is get a single action revolver with a long barrel and shoot good ammo out of that ar-15.

CMMG .22 conversion doesn’t use the gas system for operation, it is a blowback system like a 10/22 or Marlin 60. Remington 552 Speedmaster which fires shorts, longs and long rifle will cycle rat shot reliably but the limiting factor can be the plastic capsule for the shot. If you put too many in the mag tube, spring pressure can break the capsule. Not a problem with crimped shells.
