If Mack was at the fish cleaning station, he would clean your fish for you for a fee, forget how much, but not much at all, very nice guy.

I'd like to know myself. Doing an Internet search, it appears the Japanese haven't had a problem paying about $1300.00/lb. If true, there's a cool $1MM or so laying on that dock in Venice.

You realize that's retail in Japan right? And not normal anyway. You can't just sell a fish like that out of Venice to Japan, takes a logistics network already set up like they have on the east and west coast where they are sending fish weekly to Japan already.

They aren't rare in the GOM. The big females spawn in the warm jet stream. Every May you hear boats hooking up. Most lose the fish due to fighting them in deeper waters compared to the upper east coast where it's much shallower.

This and most boats don't use the tackle that is really need to fight one of these beast.

They just pass by us on their migration. They dont tend to hang around.

In Nova Scotia locals talk of big bluefin busting the hatchery nets to feed.

I don't care how much money is laying there on the dock, just think of the great eating there. To hell with selling it, steaks all around.

In the Mediterranean they catch young fish and grow them out in pens like hogs. Bourdain did a trip to Croatia and watched one of his hosts throw a bait into a pen with 200+ bluefin, yank it out of the water and have it on the grill in under 5 mins.

I have never fished offshore out of Venice but I heard the Lump is kinda the place to target tuna and I don't think it's super far out. Now if they caught those big frickers off a rig then maybe they went further. I know over here in Texas out of Freeport, we have to run about 80+ to get to rigs in deep enough water to catch tuna. Generally that is why we overnight since that run sucks in one day.

IIRC it's about 50 miles from Venice to the lump

Could someone sell one of those to a buyer/market in Louisiana or would that require special permits?

Would require commercial license and federal highly migratory commercial permit. Bluefin aren’t supposed to be targeted in the GOM, and are treated as bycatch, so the quotas are small and separate.
