I wouldn’t call them rare per se.Elusive maybe. Quite a few migrate here to spawn every year, which is why they’re protected except for a very limited quota. I don’t fish as much as some and I’ve seen bluefin blow up, and almost everyone I know who works on a platform in blue water has seen one or two cruise by at some point.

They aren't rare in the GOM. The big females spawn in the warm jet stream. Every May you hear boats hooking up. Most lose the fish due to fighting them in deeper waters compared to the upper east coast where it's much shallower.

There are a lot more of them than people realize in the GoM and definitely not rare. They typically come in around the end of March to around early June then head back to the Atlantic.

I'd like to know myself. Doing an Internet search, it appears the Japanese haven't had a problem paying about $1300.00/lb. If true, there's a cool $1MM or so laying on that dock in Venice.

They aren't selling those to market

It was worth the $2000 or so they made on the charter
