First off, I know this is a pileated one and not an Ivory Billed, but I've only ever seen this species a couple times and was lucky enough to have my camera for one of those times back in 2020.
Using this thread bump as an excuse to post pics because I was really happy with the pictures

They are very, very common in CENLA.

I play the Links, so not many trees
Other than that, don't spend time there
Been going to Marksville lately when I travel that direction for golf

I know exactly where they found em. Right where I said they would. On page 6 of this post 3/3/2020. They are still there in the Brake. Extreme marsh type heavy wooded swamp. Hard to access and hard to get thru without a pirouge or like a kayak. Got to get out a pull and wade a bunch. But they there. I stand by that still. They look different on the head. Not black and white striped neck like the Pileated. More black with one white stripe down to a patch on da back and when they on a tree their butt looks white feathered where the wings ends fold across it. Male got red on head hood but not under chin like a pileated and the female head hood almost colored like a head on a blue bill scaup drake duck.

Ah yes, the Coochie Brake flock.

We used to have one in our backyard along Bogue Chitto River. Any grandma was avid bird person and has huge bay window put in so she could watch birds on feeder etc,
She was positive she saw one even took a picture but it was 70s so wasn’t great. They keep telling her it was polytechnic wood pecker or something like that, really pissed her off. Since they have recorded their calls about 60 miles away recently, she was obviously right . Lots of people were telling them they weren’t extinct but the scientists are always so much smarter than everyone else..,lol

Bogue Chitto River.
A guy I worked with about 20 years ago claims he saw a pair of them while he was fishing the Bogue Chitto near Franklinton. He was adamant that they were ivory billed and not the pileated. He was born and raised in that area and said he has seen pileated all his life and the pair he saw were not pileated.
Whatever

No offense but I now hope they find some just to give you one less reason to be smug.

We grew up calling them "Wood hens" in KY. Easy to identify one when you hear them make their call.

Oh, and had you paid attention, at all, you would have seen where I stated that I hope they find it as well.

I don’t know which AlxTgr to believe.
Personally I like the idea of a huge woodpecker that is so stealthy you can’t find it even if you know it’s in your patch of woods. Someone should write a kids novel about a family of them.

quote:This just doesn't make sense to me and is one of the arguments that the believers should just abandon. I mean, they would be the largest of our woodpeckers. The fly. They chip away at wood. The would have to nest somewhere, so constant movement is not possible. They are not all that different from Pileated, and if you go in any wooded area near here, you'll hear 10 and see 4. I guess the bottom line is, at this point, I view it just like the black panther people. I mean, they see them all the time, right?
