By EcoWatch which is an advocacy group rather than scientific organization. The article includes "It reinforced to me that, yes, this bird does exist and left me feeling a sense of responsibility to protect it for the future." so they have a strong bias towards believing it.

That's what cracks me up. No serious Scientific news source is running wild with this, and NO ONE has accepted that it's true. If they did, they wouldn't be pointing out that the study hasn't been peer reviewed.

I would be shocked if this actually gets published in a journal, and if it does, that journal should lose all credibility at that point. Otherwise, someone needs to publish a "study" with the Patterson-Gimlin film and say Bigfoot exists.

I think it would be awesome if the bird was found after all this time. But, as you pointed out, many reputed ornithologists have been unsuccessful in their efforts.

I'm in the panhandle, and st Vincent island is not too far away. There is a colony of red wolves on the island. Not sure about other places

I'm not far to the east. It's pretty likely that Red Wolves have made it over, Indian Pass is really short and there have been some strong storms. A surprisingly few coyotes on my game cams, and none looked like red wolves. But I think it is just a matter of time.

If they have all of these specimens frozen in some lab at Harvard, why don't they just do a little DNA work with pileated embryos or something?

I thought that was plausible these days?

I have a feeling in the next 5 years this bird will be documented better and some specimens collected to try and bring back a viable population.

Yup, I have this one hanging in my office. I used to wonder why they always looked a bit off but he would prop em up with wires to paint them.

Funny y'all mention that...

Since this discussion I got on Ebay and found this one.

I also have his passenger pigeon one, so that makes two Audubon's now of extinct birds in my collection.

I really want that one.

I have the IBWP, wood duck, and pine martin. None of them are in good enough shape to be valuable but I like looking at them.
