How are these smaller diesels doing for you 1/2 truck owners?
Anyone have experience with them?

Have 18k on my Silverado 3.0. Love it, not a single issue so far. It's averaging around 28mpg mostly highway.

I have a 2018 ecodiesel. I've had one issue with the engine but it was related to a recall that I had just received the notice for a week prior to the truck acting up. I also had an issue with my touch screen bubbling causing it to go crazy with ghost touches, luckily the warranty covered that.

As far as fuel mileage goes I average 23 MPG on the interstate and 26-27 on the hwy. We also pull a 3 horse bumper pull loaded down fairly often and it handles the load very well.

the problem with 1/2 ton diesels is they put a diesel in there that should be in a cayon....not a full size. Put a capable engine in there that has more then 275hp not an eco POS.

I have the 4 wheel drive Silverado with 23,000 miles, and I absolutely love it. Diesel prices suck right now, but I'm getting about 22mpg in the city and 27 on the hwy. I can get the avg. mpg up to 32 when I really milk it on a long highway at about 55mph.

Really smooth power and accelerates really quickly at speed. I'm pleased with it to say the least. Saving up now for the 150,000 mile wet belt replacement everyone seems to complain about.

My experience and numbers exactly with my 3.0 Silverado 4-wheel drive. Can't say enough good things about this engine so-far. Strong, quiet, miserly and pulls like a tank. I pull a 20 ft BassCat w/ 250 4-stroke Merc and average 20-21 mpg towing it in the hilly Carolinas.

You've got it arse backwards. The engines are plenty capable for half ton towing / payload. They're set up for fuel economy (small engines) with enough capability for light duty towing. The idea is fuel economy, not roasting tires.

If you want performance and longevity with heavy work get a heavy duty truck.

This is exactly why I got mine. Fuel economy for my weekday commute and the capability of weekend towing.

Out of curiosity, how much weight are you towing on the weekend?

It's an aluminum 3 horse bumper pull trailer loaded with 3 horses and tack. I've looked a few times for the trailers weight and never found an exact number but the horses and tack are probably 2000-2500lb.s so that plusses the trailer.

You're the target market for them. Small diesel engines are awesome and it's a shame they're so under-utilized in the US. We really frick ourselves hard with the ultra strict emissions regs

So you peaked my curiosity about this trailer, Google says it's somewhere between 2800 and 3600 so that plus horses.

My 3 horse Cherokee was around 4500-5000# I think. The half ton pulled it but it was so much more pleasant pulling it with my dually. Power wasn’t the issue. It just moved the half ton around a lot more. But I understand why you want

I don't want a heavy duty. But I want some performance that's more then a 3l i6.

I've got 85000 miles on a Powerstroke 3.0 (Lariat FX4) with no problems. I pull a small alum bass boat, 19ft travel trailer, and a tandem axle trailer with a JD990 (with loader). The tractor is by far the heaviest I pull and I figure it's about 5500 with the trailer.

I just wish Ford wouldn't have stopped production because I'd order another in December. Typically with factory tires it gets 24.5 and with the 35 mud tires it gets 20-21

This is an ignorant take.
They have 475+ ft-lbs of torque. My 3.0 Duramax isn’t going to win a drag race, but it’s got plenty of towing capacity. I’ll get 25-30 on the highway and I’ve towed a 21’ bass boat and gotten 16 mpg. It does everything I need it to, and does it efficiently.
And the newest model is going to be rated to tow 13000 lbs.

277 hp and 460 ft/lbs of torque is stout for a little 3.0 diesel. The torque makes all of the difference.

If you want more than the 277 hp a 3.0 Duramax comes with, you can mod it fairly inexpensively with a cold air intake and a tuner and push it closer to 320-330 hp.

My next truck is on order with the 3.0 Duramax.

My company truck is a 2016 Eco Diesel 4x4. I just hit 142k, I’ve been the driver for about half of that. Only issue mechanically I’ve had is a turbo speed sensor, and a coolant line leaked after performing a recall.

The truck rides well, and gets good fuel MPG. The turbo lag when pulling out in traffic is bad.

Other than that no complaints with the truck.

You're an idiot. The 7.3 powerstroke made 250 hp in 2001, and nobody ever talks about that engine being a turd. These small diesels are extremely powerful for a half ton truck and fit what they are meant for excellently. They have loads of low end torque and a very broad power band.

The 5.0 cummins was a major flop because it was too big, costed too much, made more power than necessary, and burned too much fuel. Why pay HD price, get HD fuel economy, and not have HD capability?
