Was 12 when it happened. Still is the greatest sports moment I’ve seen in my life. I loved my LSU and Saints moments of course but this was a different level. Much like the Space Race shite they cannot make enough stuff about this event for me.

I do think a lot of things don’t do a good enough job capturing how good the Soviet team was.
Totally agree but there are a couple of 1980 hockey documentaries that kind of do a deep dive on them, tge Reds, and how they were unbeatable. And if you put them all together, it's so cool what happens in our memories.
To see the remaining 16 together and tear up 45 years later was too much. I admit to a bit of a fist pump sports cry all over again. They did, so I don't feel too bad.

watched it last night, really enjoyed it. And as an aside, seeing this doc with so many interviews of the people on the team, the film Miracle was really well done as well.

It was a college team beating the best professional team in the world.
Super Series
From 1976 to 1991 total of 18 series were held; the Soviet teams won 14 and the NHL won 2, with the remaining two series tied.
Super Series 1980: (a month before the Olympics)
quote:
On December 27th in 1979, the New York Rangers kicked off the Super Series1980 by hosting the Moscow Central Red Army Team at Madison Square Garden. The Russians beat the Blueshirts easily, 5-2.
The Rangers were the same team that had made it to the Stanley Cup FInals the previous season.
The reason for that blow out, according to Mike Nykoluk, the Rangers’ assistant coach, was the Central Red Army team's superior conditioning. “The clubs in the National Hockey League are nowhere near the condition they are in,” said Nykoluk.
“They are in good shape,” Maloney admitted. “I think that has to do with the different lifestyles and the different ways people think about different things.” The Russians’ free-flowing style of play, he said, has its roots in strict regimentation. “I don't know if the way society is here you could incorporate that strict style of discipline into the game,” he added.
“They do everything well,” Maloney said, “and when they are in trouble they don't give the puck away.”
The Central Red Army team, which has four games remaining with N.H.L. teams, plays the Islanders on Saturday afternoon at Nassau Coliseum. Even after their impressive showing last night, Nykoluk said, “I don't really think that you have seen them at their best, yet.”

In 1981 the Russians destroyed a Canadian team with Gretzky, Bourque, Bossy, Trottier, Potvin, and others 8-1.

Watched it but the HBO Documentary on this from the early 2000's was better because it had interviews with several of the Russian players as well.

Absolutely loved it. They had more players interviewed than any other doc I’ve watched on this story. Seeing the players celebrate with their families was awesome and the post game conference after the Finland game.
The HBO doc from 2001 or so is a must view and of course the Disney movie.
I still think his speech to them before the Finland game is much better than the one he gave before the Soviet game.
“If you lose this game, you’ll take it to your bleeping grave”. Goes to leave, stops and repeats “you’re bleeping grave”

Yeah that was great...because the magnitude of what the American kids did is really only clear to a casual non-historian if you show the story, perspective and thoughts from the other side.
My favorite contributor to that HBO Doc is the Russian sports journalist who has insightful and funny quotes and anecdotes... For example:
Russian:
"When the word got out that the Soviets lost and the game was shown (tape delay, next day) nobody believed in that...first of all, it was loss to the Americans, second of all, its loss to Americans on American soil....AND then which is the most embarrassing, you lose to the College guys...Are they drunk, or what? What happened?"

I was 9. And I still get goosebumps and butterflies remembering a house full of little boys running around like we knew any of the rules.
I was 12. I remember going outside after it just ended, and seeing everyone on my street out there going crazy. It was like we'd just won WW3 without firing a shot, unless it was a shot on goal. Amazing thing to experience as a kid.

I think we’d unite and rally around a deep World Cup run this summer, especially as it’s framed by the 250 celebration.

I just rewatched miracle on ice after watching the documentary. That movie had so much detail that matched the doc. Kurt Russell did a great job playing Herb Brooks.

One cool and unique thing about that movie most people don’t know (I didn’t until recent years). Instead of teaching actors how to skate and somewhat play hockey. They took actual hockey players and taught them how to act.
That’s why the action scenes are really good.

Herb Brooks deserves to be mentioned among the all time coaching greats.
In the same company as Saban, Lombardi, Belichick, Phil Jackson, etc.
Its the greatest American sports story ever told. All those guys are national heroes. Hope I get to meet at least one of them before they're all gone.

One of the nice touches is that they go more into the details of the Finland game than I'd ever seen.

I love Brooks quote before the Finland game.
“You lose this game and you’ll take it to your fricking grave.”
“Your fricking grave.”
(Walks out)
