That's not her xray. I don't believe her xrays have been posted anywhere, but based on the treatment she's had I suspect she has a tibial plateau fracture - involving the upper part of the tibia into the joint.

That's not an actual x-ray of Vonn's leg:

When she said she would need multiple surgeries she wasn’t kidding.
She just completed her 3rd.
When I say this was a ‘bad’ fracture I wasn’t kidding.
This is called an external fixator (‘x-fix’) and is being used to help stabilize the fractured tibia (and maybe more).
When I show this x-ray, it’s not hers but now you get an idea of what she’s dealing with.
Best of luck to her.

There are now fears of potential amputation as she's about to go through a fourth surgery:

She has extensive damage to her knee as well as the upper part of her leg, which could cause her to have an amputated limb. I am not the one in the hole.
Bottom line, she was 41 years old and attempting to compete on a completely torn ACL tendon. Admirable. But mistaken.

Talk of amputation is just fear mongering for clicks. The article had two doctors who haven’t examined her or even seen her X-rays speculate that she could need an amputation. Could she end up there? Sure, you can have complications with any surgery but there’s nothing unusual about her treatment. An external fixator is standard treatment for tibial plateau fractures where there is concern about swelling. It looks like she had a fasciotomy for compartment syndrome which is more concerning but even that will typically heal well. It requires additional surgery to clean the wounds and eventually close the skin. Multiple surgeries does not suggest she has had complications, it’s just how you treat these injuries. Her Olympic days are over but let’s not get her fitted for a prosthetic leg just yet.

Dark humor here…I think after a bit of training, we can guarantee some Paralympics golds if that’s the games..
In all seriousness, that’s pretty awful if true and hope she makes as good of a recovery as possible.
I’ve had a number of knee surgeries and while not comparable here, I know what it’s like to be an athlete, sidelined with no guarantee if you’ll be back out there.

You are obviously correct. She showed poor judgement.

I didn't know they used chainsaw chain links in surgery now, but I hope they left a port for oil.
Seriously, yeesh.

One of my surgeons once told it's mostly the difference in the price of the tools.... when joking about our shared hobby of cabinet making.

quote:I'll meet you halfway here. Her knee injury stripped away a lot of the body's redundant "systems". The one injury didn't cause this, the crash did. We wouldn't even be discussing this if she made it down the mountain. She just had two untimely crashes that added up to what are seeing now. Nothing more, nothing less. I'm not a fan of hers but I was impressed to see her "balls to the wall" approach.
