Please ponder the reputation of the Congressman whose name is on the letter. This letter is not a judicial fact finding. Waxman is one of the biggest opponents of the oil industry. Moreover, his letter does not consider industry economics or their interplay with tactical implementation of well design.

I thought that there were several strings of casing in the wellbore for reduncancy in the event that the formation breaks down??

I read about half of the letter and it sounds like only one string of casing is in the hole, no?

If BP made bad decisions, that's GOOD for the Oil industry.

Means they, and not ALL of the industry, are fricking morons who should be punished.

Hope they also summoned MMS folks, because they signed off on all the BP screw-ups.

WHis congressman is that? Joe Barton? Steve Scalise?

Letter seemed pretty straight forward and clear to me. The whole committee will have had input. Waxman is the committee shair, hence he signed the letter.

Industry Economics?

Absolutely. And it seems others feel that way too...

Exxon Mobil says BP drilling outside industry norm

WASHINGTON June 14 (Reuters) - Exxon Mobil (XOM.N: Quote) will tell U.S. lawmakers at a congressional hearing on Tuesday that BP's (BP.L: Quote) Deepwater Horizon oil rig was operated outside the industry norm, leading to the biggest offshore oil spill in U.S. history.

"This incident represents a dramatic departure from the industry norm in deepwater drilling," Exxon Mobil Chairman and CEO Rex Tillerson said in his written testimony obtained by Reuters to the House Energy and Environment Subcommittee's scheduled hearing on the oil spill and how to secure America's energy future.
Tillerson said if oil companies properly designed offshore wells, built in layers of protective redundancy, properly inspected equipment and focused on safety, then incidents like the current Gulf oil spill "should not occur.

Cool read. Could have been shorter though. Something like
Dear Tony,

Looking foreward to your testimony before our committee. We have already made up our minds, but still we'd love to talk with you.

Sincerely,
Henry

P.S. Let's not talk about all the money BP has passed out over the years to various congressional campaigns. That could be taken out of context and completely misunderstood.

Meh. Who DIDN'T expect the other companies to distance themselves from this? Even if such a dangerous level of slacking were the actual (as opposed to the "industry") norm, every other oil company would still be coming out against what BP did while silently tightening up their own ships behind the scenes. It would be the same in any other industry.

He should stop writing letters, get on a boat to the middle of the slick and start snorting. That frikkin snoz could suck up half the spill.
