I just watched them saw cut one of the external (choke/kill) lines from the side of the riser about 50' from the BOP. The shear is set up what looks to me about 50' from the BOP.

Maybe that is as close as they can get for some reason. Maybe I am mistaken.

they locked the diamond cutter on top of the BOP last night.

Did not know this......Perhaps it did not work for some reason. Perhaps they need to cut it in both areas to make it work. I hope this is the case. I have been out of the loop over the weekend.

I think the shear is to cut the riser further away from the BOP. It is my understanding that the riser directly on top of the BOP is going to be cut with the diamond cutter (which locked on last night) and that is where the LMRP will sit. Am I wrong?

You very well could be correct. I hope you are.

In watching last night, I thought they may have locked the cutter on to secure the spot so that when the weight of riser was cut off, even if it shifts the top of BOP they are still in the right spot.

Why has nobody in the media picked up on the Gulf shutdown? I would think this would be a newsworthy event!!

Well, the answer (to me) is fairly obvious, but is also fairly political, & hence, sensitive. Why has Katrina been portrayed as only affecting one segment of the population as opposed to all?

I will stop at saying that the mainstream media does not understand and has not been interested in understanding, the necessary, critical relationship that we have with oil & gas. Its complicated & doesn't fit neatly into the "big oil vs. environmentalist" picture they portray. To their credit, the Times-Pic has had a couple stories about this topic, but by and large the big outlets just don't get it and don't care. /end rant.

Tiger Fred / Oilfied / Judge Holen / COTiger:

You four have great knowledge either through experience, friends, or research to cut to the chase.

Right now I am in "politics be damned" and "I don't really care about media" mode. All I care about and pray for is containment and quick drilling for relief before the central gulf get a cat 3 on top of it before August 30....right?

So - what is your assessment as to where BP is in this LMRP replacement procedure? Can it work?

The other question I have for the oilfield and offshore vets on here is this one:

Outside of the media, what are the theories from the oil guys as to why the BOP failed? Was it one rare event or a rare succession of events?

OTJ.

If they get the riser off cleanly, I think it can work.

Thanks for the props.

If they can get a clean cut it has a good shot of working. Better than anything else they've attempted. It will all depend on how good of a seal they can get.

They closed the annular preventer before the first explosion but there was likely too much pressure for the annular preventer to make a seal. The shear rams are designed to shear pipe that is in tension which it likely no longer was with the well blowing gas out. Since the well blew out around the 9 5/8 casing seals and they had a bad cement job on the 7 inch casing it's likely that casing string is now sitting in the BOP as well. If that's the case, the rams would not be able to shear both the drill pipe and the 9 5/8 inch casing.

It's that slow. It has to build up enough hydraulic pressure to make the cut.

I wouldn't want my finger in that thing.
