Has anyone heard how long a process the shearing is expected to be?

Update? Does someone know if they have completed the riser cut? It looks like they are preparing to shear, but I was unclear whether they made the cut at the top of the BOPs.

I believe it just cut the riser.

No, the riser has not been cut at the BOP, although it looked like the plumes from the splits were larger (although the angle was slightly different).

Looks like the shear might not catch all of one of the smaller pipes. Need to drop it down another ten inches.

They appear to be cutting that pipe with the circular saw now.

Not sure about that but this does look like an incredibly difficult thing to do.

This may be a stupid question, but once the riser is cut at the BOP would the Top Kill not have a better chance of being successful? It seems that the leaking of the mud through the holes in the riser prevented the pressure build up they needed. So if LMRP does not work could they attempt the Top Kill again with a clean level cut and only one exit point for the oil?

Quite the oposite. Once the riser is cut, any little bit of back pressure that the long tube and frictional forces were providing are gone, IMHO. I think there should be less back pressure to pump against and force mud downhole. Also there may have been some obstructions within the riser portion that will have been cut off.

My question is, "is that the closeset to the BOP that they can make the cut? I owuld think the closer the better for capturing the effluent and having one "point source" to deal with." Just an observation.

I watched until 0430 your time last night....they locked the diamond cutter on top of the BOP last night. I never saw any cuts to the riser, down pipe or on top of the BOP
