I'd think that after 40 days with the BOP being the center of attention, there is about 0% chance of them not knowing.

That is what you get for thinking...

I wonder if they are watching the lean while the cut the riser further down stream. To make sure nothing moves and posibble weakens or starts leaking.
I was thinking the same thing although it would be cool to see the shears in action. I guess we are lucky to see anything at all.
Judge, I think you've got it there with making sure that cut will be level. That just adds another dimension of uncertainty with the elastomer seal they will use.

The Shears of Doom (tm). Looks like something out of a Bond movie.
Somebody asked the question, when will the cut be made on the top of the LMRP. The video that paulie linked said toward the end of the week. Seems like they're close to being ready but there must be a lot of stuff to do yet, like cut the other end of the riser.

Anybody have an explanation for all the debris/stuff moving across screen right to left?
Are they still applying the dispersant down there?

Not sure about the dispersant. Last I hear a couple of days ago they had reduced how much they were using.
Looks like they are lowering the diamond wire saw now on the live feed.

1:48 a.m. and it looks like they are about to cut off the riser.

That saw is having a little trouble maneuvering into position away from the plume

Are they cutting yet?

I think that is on the money. They have to be concerned what is going to happen when the weight of the riser comes off the stack.
I haven't been watching, but I am betting they slacked up the weight on the riser by pulling up on the crane, all the while watching the angle of the stack, before they started cutting. If they thought the riser was holding up the stack, I am sure they would not be cutting it off.

Wow! Check that bad boy out! They are showing the hydraulic cutters right now.
Posted on 6/1/10 at 7:09 am to JudgeHolden
Looks like they're trying to guide the shears over the riser at this point.
Posted on 6/1/10 at 7:11 am to JudgeHolden
Looks like they are moving the shears into place. I thought the riser was already cut on top of the bop.
Posted on 6/1/10 at 7:36 am to CootKilla
Looks like they need to rotate the shear 180 degrees.
Posted on 6/1/10 at 7:53 am to TIGER2
Shear is on the pipe now--wonder how long before they cut.
Posted on 6/1/10 at 8:01 am to JasonLSU
Looks like the shear might not catch all of one of the smaller pipes. Need to drop it down another ten inches.
