do hydraulic lines run to the surface or is there a system down there?

Looks like a motor on the side of it so I suspect it's an independent system.

looking at the new Top Hat device, why can't a device be incorporated into it to have claw like devices built in that would grab the top of the BOP and really force the top hat down then simply have a valve that closes off instead of them trying to recover the oil?

Why not lower a device down on top of the BOP to shut it off?

Delay??

Is there a delay between the remote control on the ships and the ROV's below? Does anybody know?

Or is it fiber optic and near simultaneous?

Any chance that shear can't make that cut?

I was just thinking that I hope they tried to cut the same type of pipe on the surface as a test.

I think you would need to remove the riser irregardless.

I would say there is definitely a chance it couldn't make the cut but surely they would have calculated how much force they needed before sending it down.

That thing will be wedged in there good if it can't make the cut.

well yeah and to make the cut with a diamond covered blade sounds good also but what I'm saying is if they can build a top hat that is connected to the ship, why not put a shut off valve in it and simply shut the leak off?

Disconnect the device from the ship and leave it in place till the relief well is finished.

how thick is the wall of that pipe again? I imagine once oil starts coming out we will know it is cutting through it.

because its not really connected to the top of the pipe, the pressure would blow it off

Because you must make a seal down there and you cannot make a seal with the busted up riser in place.

yeah, I forgot how big it was, watching that video constantly makes you think its about a 4 inch pipe.

Dude.
You're not getting it.

Cut the riser off as planned, lower the new top hat down as planned except modify the new top hat with a shut off valve and some sort of clamping/retaining device that would latch it onto the BOP very tightly.

After it is shut off, disconnect the top hat from the ship.

the pressure would blow it off, it just sits there with a piece of rubber around the outside of the tube

Dude, there's like 14,000 psi at that wellhead. They aren't interested in creating a gigantic pipe bomb.

ok,I didn't know a wellhead could explode but what I don't understand is why a device that secures the tophat to the BOP couldn't be devised.
I know it's going to just sit on top with a seal.
