That's the top of the BOP / riser you are seeing right now. They spent most of the day cutting away smaller pipes around the riser. They lowered a large "cutter" to cut the riser (not sure if this has been done yet) at a distance away from the BOP to relieve torque on the BOP. Next they are going to position a diamond cutter saw on top of the BOP to clean cut the riser on top of the BOP. (at least that is what I think is going on).

They've also been cutting small stuff off the BOP cleaning up the area, I'm guessing to make sure no unnecessary stuff is in the area to clog up the works when that diamond rope saw comes to play...

The general area at the top of the BOP seems a lot cleaner now, as far as the structure. Still lots of stuff blowing out.

give an update on where we stand, and what we are seeing on the feed?

Looks like to me they have the diamond saw on the riser and are cutting. But I defer as I have not been able to watch all day.

I guess what I am saying is that I really like seeing technical critiques ("They should have put that mud mat down three days ago when they had slack time on the ROVs). I am not much interested in the lynch mob style of comments.

Funny Judge , My first post was exactly that. I'm not lynching anyone. God speed to the crew's trying to stop this.

One thing BP didn't state in their technical update today was the capacity of the Discoverer Enterprise to contain and control the well once the LMRP is in place. What if the flow of oil / gas exceeds the capacity of the ship?

Spoke too soon! I thought the oil was coming out of a saw cut, but I think it is just coming out of the holes in the riser. So, to fairly answer your question, no, I don't know what they are doing. Sorry for my ignorance and haste.

I am guessing they would put it on frac barges or something.

I think they are going to do the shear scissors next to cut the riser downstream of the kink.

Is it just me or does the top of the BOP look bent to the left from this view??

it looks like it is leaning to the left...is this expected?

But you have to separate the oil from the gas and flare off the gas. Let's hope the Enterprise can handle the flow.

I think he/she means rate not holding capacity. If rate was to much I believe it will leak out at the connection. I would thin they would have pressure relief valves somewhere.

I am hoping the bending to the left is expected...fwiw, this scares me to death.

Yes it does look bent in the direction of the fallen riser which makes sense. That was a lot of moment arm force on the top of the BOP there. The LMRP cap hopefully is designed to handle this! I hope they are not just now noticing. I think they planned on lowering the LMRP straight down to get a good seal. At this angle it may be a challenge.

Anybody have an explanation for all the debris/stuff moving across screen right to left?

let me preface this by saying I know squat about offshore drilling...hell, I am a nurse, but I have noticed that they are just using the camera to stare at this shot. I hope they did not just notice that this thing is kicked to the left. I am sure the LMRP could be made to fit on an angle but I would guess it would have the greatest chance of success with a straight on shot.

No. But it is kind of soothing to watch it. Kind of like staring at a fire in the fireplace.

I think that is why they have emphasized the need for a level cut.
