Yeah but they suffered a delay while they sought approval from the Coast Guard for the junk shot. That basically reset the clock

Was the "junk shot" not part of the original "top kill" plan?

Less mud is in the hole because it all flowed out?

Is there a new rupture in the foreground? what was that big plume?

this plan was SOL from the beginning considering the end of the riser was open. there was no way this mud was going to just go down the well and stop it from flowing. it was always going to find the path of least resistance which is up the fricking pipe

it should be, if the points where they tied into the stack hold the pressure generated as part of this top kill attempt. a potential issue would be those tie-in points (at the choke and kill lines) failing while pumping at high pressure, then i guess it would depend on what exactly happened whether you could re-engage it for another attempt. Failing that, i guess you could come up w/ some other method to do it. trying to get a stinger of some sort into the stack and circulating a fluid around. but yeah, one other thing i'm not clear on is how the heavy mud will be driven downhole and not take a path of least resistance and u-tube out of the existing surface leak. if they think they have some BOP stack components closed (like a set of pipe rams or the much-maligned annular from the 60 minutes piece, it should help out -- but if the DP that it's closed around was open at the end (and since they were pumping abandonment cement plugs, it almost undoubtedly was), it still may u-tube around.

Why can't the freakin president of this country go down there and demand an update straight from BP, on air?

When Gustave hit and Entergy stated they would relase their planned work schedule in 3 or 4 days, Jindal responded that 3 to 4 days would not work, he wanted a plan in 24 hrs. Somebody needs to light a fire.

From NYT:

"In an operation known as a “junk shot,” BP engineers poured pieces of rubber, golf balls and other materials into the crippled blowout preventer, trying to clog the device that sits atop the wellhead. The maneuver was designed to work in conjunction with the continuing “top kill” operation, in which heavy drilling liquids are pumped into the well to counteract the pressure of the gushing oil.

If the efforts succeeded, officials intended to pump cement into the well to seal it. But the company suspended pumping operations at 2:30 a.m. Friday after two “junk shot” attempts, said the technician, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the efforts."

This "technician" was pretty much on the money yesterday.

Further from NYT:

"But the technician working on the effort said that despite the injections at various pressure levels, engineers had been able to keep less than 10 percent of the injection fluids inside the stack of pipes above the well. He said that was barely an improvement on Wednesday’s results when the operation began and was suspended in its 11th hour of operations. BP resumed the pumping effort Thursday evening for about 10 more hours.

“I won’t say progress was zero, but I don’t know if we can round up enough mud to make it work,” said the technician. “Everyone is disappointed at this time.”"

Damn.

Evidently not, and my question is why the hell not? It's like these people never heard of contingencies. Tell the CG that we're gonna try pumping mud into the well and if we can't get enough down, we're going to try a limited junk shot. CG stamps APPROVED on the plan and away we go. But apparently they had to wait for approval before proceeding with the junk shot.

And if the flow is lessened at the moment, it might be because they aren't pumping mud.

Damn. Ruptured would likely mean it made things worse, no?
Obviously I'm just speculating. That could mean a lot of things.

That's what I was wondering. The plume appears to be lighter than it was a little while ago and so I wonder if they've started another junk shot.
