Every time those ROVs just sit still like that I can't help but think hopefully those ROV ops are taking a well deserved coffee break.

What are the ROVs doing in the video feeds now, watching and waiting?

From this mornings SITREP:
They have stabbed the LMRP Top hat onto the top of the BOP stack. They made the stab at 2033 hrs and then opened the valves. They started flaring gas at the Enterprise at 2300 hrs and received oil at 2315 hrs. They are in the process of closing the vent valves and will continue to ramp up the flow to the Enterprise.

No mention of hydrates yet, which I take as a good sign. Also, they are supposed to start capturing from the Skandi Neptune via the C/K lines which has probably not happened yet. It will likely take a few days for them to maximize the capture. This could work fairly well as they get it dialed in. Of course a Hurricanne would be a real kick in the nuts.

It is La....Poor state seems to have the worst of luck. I would not be suprised to see 2 hurricanes in the next week.

Sid, I hope you are right and it will increasingly collect more oil.....it doesn't look a whole lot better than it did late last night...

I swear last night they said Thad Allen would have a press conference at 8 AM.

does it appear that the top hat is moving around a little?

Even if he did have a press conference he doesn't seem to be giving up too much information. Anybody hear any more about them getting narration to go along with the video feeds. CNN was really pushing for that last night.

Anyone know how long the shifts are for the ROV operating teams?
On a normal job they work a 12 hour shift from noon to midnight. That is when they are doing 24 hour operations. At least that's what Oceaneering operators work.

What kind of training/education do the ROV guys have? I would assume that they have some sort of engineering degree.

someone answered that question a few days ago, I think they said it was just regular guys who are trained

WOW I would have really thought with everything that could go wrong and the split second decisions they might have to make.... wow either way they are doing an awesome job.

Actually when I got my basic offshore training at Oceaneering I was with a class of about 25 ROV trainees. Most of them had NAVY backgrounds, a lot were electricians, and a few had like Business degrees. When you apply for a ROV Tech job you have to take electrical and hydraulic apptitude test. Then if you are hired you go through a 9 week training course working out in the yard, some classroom time, and a lot of time in our simulators. And for about the first year offshore you just suck up as much knowledge as you can.

Thanks for the insight. I have students here in class watching all this unfold and "how do you become an ROV driver?" is the most popular question.
