The gross level of tax fraud that has been the norm for decades is going to bit them in the arse when they file their lawsuits.

Make no mistake, the federal judges that are assigned these cases will have IRS examiners waiting in the courtrooms from when they try to introduce their lost income claims.

would the acoustic switches that are required in other countries have made any difference in this situation

it's hard to say w/o knowing exactly what happened. what has been misreported is that this feature is required in other parts of the world - specifically in brazil. it is not required, however, it is suggested - i don't know off the top of my head what percentage of rigs working off brazil specifically have this and which ones don't. i'm not sure about norway, but i do know that this is not required in the UK sector of the north sea.

there are some issues w/ this system, specifically around accoustic interference from thrusters on dynamically positioned rigs distorting the signal.

if the power supply at the stack was compromised, or the sealing capability of the rams was compromised due to the high flowrate through them, or if they were in an unshearable situation, it probably wouldn't have helped.

Dude, you just need to retire from this board or stop being "thankful" to BP. Are you fricking serious?!? You are the same one who thought this spill would have no "residual" affects a year from now.

How the hell are they "treating locals right" when they turn away BP non-contracted environmental organizations and people wanting and willing to help clean up the coast. Yeah sure, they give a 5K check here and there to locals, but how long is that going to last them?

for the record, i've dealt with similar situations and if the fishermen just call the IRS they'll pay some penalties for the past 3 years and then file those 3, and typically they make so little they end up getting money back

Required in Norway since 1993. BP has them on two of their rigs there.

That shite does not fly for fraud, which is what that is.

And, if that is getting a pass from the Courts, then frick those judges.

Some of you people have no idea just how hard it is to drill offshore. And as long as things are going well and the money is flowing, then you're happy as clams. Then when things go bad, it's all about "why weren't people thinking ahead?"

You almost sound like federal regulators.

If they were going to get money back, wouldn't they have filed in the first place?

I don't know what the current statistics are, but in the late 80s, Plaquemines Parish had one of the largest "underground economies" in the nation.

There was a disproportionate amount of $100 bills in circulation, relative to the population. The assumption was that many business transactions were being conducted in cash, and not necessarily being reported to the IRS.

Yes it is difficult but why even drill if there is not a plan in place in case of a spill or technology to stop a spill in a reasonable amount of time? But taking suggestions from the general public on how to stop a leak doesnt seem like a good plan.

BP specifically said they can handle a spill 60x this size when drilling at deep depths. I'm having a hard time believing that after this effort and the lying and deceit to the american public regarding the spill.

There has been oil exploration offshore for almost 50 years now and this is the first large drilling accident ever in US waters (Valdez doesn't count as a drilling accident). I'd say in general the oil companies do a good job but of course the feds were just itching to take control and here is their shot.

BP has been upfront with the locals so far. They don't seem as angry with BP as you would think on Grand Isle. Now if BP stops cutting checks then I'm sure they'll be singing a different tune. Money has a tendency to make people ignore things.

Many are still of the mindset its a one month thing and it'll be cleaned up fast. A full year of this mess and many will be changing their tune.

"BP has been upfront with the locals so far."

Now, I am convinced that you work for BP, Cosmo. Have they been up front with locals to tell them how much oil is actually spewing out? If this was the case, then there would have been a much more hastened response to protect this coast line and actually admit thet they need help, BEACSUE THEY HAVE NO CLUE. Have they been up front with actually knowing about the dispersants they are using and telling locals that there is a very good chance that these dispersants are just taking the oil of of the surface of the water and actually causing a bigger problem sinking the oil to the gulf floor?
