Heard the other day on the radio about a dispersant that would send out microbes to essentially eat the oil and turn it into soil.

Dude I am in the chemical business

some of the info in that link is extremely outdated

my post wasn't directed at you, but just a basic info link for those who want to know what dispersants are supposed to do

No worries

as to the microbes question, that is in soil applications

there are naturally occurring organisms in the sea that will digest the oil molecules eventually. The best way to speed that up is spread out the oil (disperse it) and reduce the oil's concentration level

that is the principle behind the dilution is the solution for pollution

Exactly, so can we please quit with all the bitching about it. The oil is much better on the bottom than on the top.

Link?

I would think it would be much better on the surface where it can be cleaned up vs. on the bottom where its much harder to be cleaned up and also spawning grounds/ forage area for many fish species and shrimp.

I fully understand the problems of it getting getting into the coastal marshes. However, a light coating on the veg can be consumed by a microbe application. Which wouldnt harm photosynthesis and allow the plant to function. A thick crude oil coating would be devastating.

The vast majority of the species are estuarine dependent and life cycles intrinsicly linked to offshore.

In deep water, which is where the oil is, it will sink to the bottom and be eaten by microbes. There are natural organisms on the bottom of the ocean the will feed on the oil. There is a minuet amount of oil in shallow water as of right now.

I understand the dispersant idea. However, I guess its better when its suspending in the water column and microbes can consume it. With the sight being so close to Mississippi River which carries a lot of sediment which carries a lot of microbes, it will help in the cleanup effort.

However, I dont buy this out of sight out of mind philosophy. There are food chain ramifications you are dealing with here.

Ooops, Organic Chemists overlook nettlesome problem of oxygen depletion.

If this is true about the oil being near the bottom in deepwater that would probably be a good thing compared to washing up on shore or being deposited in shallow waters on the bottom. While I realize the deepwater gulf bottom is not lifeless, it is probably not the breeding ground for many of the commercially and recreationally important species of seafood and would have a far less reaching impact on other sea life like birds and dolphins living near the shore. The oil settling near the bottom in deepwater has to be much better than being in the marshes and shallow bays.

That would be true if it were to stay on the bottom.
But it probably isn't going to behave that way.
It will more likely be like a lava lamp effect, continually rising and sinking.

I sure hope you are just being ignorant for the sake of arguing. Better on the bottom, because oil naturally leaks everyday, and the ecosystem is fine? Fact: vast amount of oil along with dispersants depleats vast amount of oxygen, sounds safe right? Or maybe someone in your family works for BP? I bet you voted Obama for sake of argument also.....
